It's model dependent -- but the sensor is part of the palmrest keyboard assembly, which would need to be replaced. Beyond the cost, it requires a total system teardown so it's not a practical post-purchase addition.
@ejn63 is spot on with his information. However though it may not be so elegant as a palmrest have you considered a USB fingerprint sensor as an alternative? This page has recommendations. And this Amazon page shows others.
