Dell XPS not detecting external monitor

My Dell XPS (15 inch 9570 model) laptop is not detecting LG external monitor via HDMI cable using Windows 10. I confirm the HDMI cable and the LG monitor are being detected and working fine when connected from Lenovo laptop. When I connect external monitor from XPS laptop via HDMI, the Windows display settings shows an yellow coloured message "did not detect another display display" (pic 1 attached). But advanced display settings show the option 'Display 2: LG Ultrawide'. Below that the display information section shows as Display 2: LG Ultrawide connected to Intel(R) UHD graphics 630 (pic 2 attached). I have updated the display drivers for Intel UHD graphics, but still the content is not being projected. Could anyone please help

Anything change when you press FN+F8?

Yes, when I press FN+F8 I get the project options. I forcefully selected the project option to second screen. The XPS screen goes blank for a second and then re appears again, nothing happens from the monitor side though.

@Prasanth Eranki  The XPS 15 9570 has a known issue where the HDMI output can't work with DVI displays.  I doubt you're using DVI on the display, but I'm wondering if there might be something else going on with that output.  If you're not using the USB-C port for something else, as a workaround you could try to connect to your LG display using a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.  And just as a general tip, when asking for tech support assistance like this, it helps to provide technical detail.  In this case the exact display model you're using would be good to include, just in case it's relevant, since sometimes it can be.

Thank you for getting back to me. The monitor model is LG 29UM69G. I do not have USB C to USB C cable (3.1 Gen 2) to connect my XPS to monitor (monitor has USB C port). I ordered one and it's on the way I will test it soon. I am a little reluctant to use any other adapters that involve HDMI (like HDMI to display port) because they native HDMI to HDMI is not working so I doubt other HDMI adapters would work. I am more interested to try out USB C. however it is very frustrating to see such an expensive laptop not working with HDMI connectivity out of the box. My 10-year-old Lenovo doesn't have any issues and it connected right away.

Using USB-C to USB-C cable worked for projecting display from xps to external monitor. HDMI still not working.

I had the same thing today - monitor and cable obviously not the problem due to working via the USB-C break-out box.  HDMI port came back on after the 3rd computer restart.   It may have been related to starting the computer with the HDMI cable plugged in, but the monitor unplugged from the wall socket - didn't seem to like that ie not recovering when monitor plugged back in.

Just to make sure, have you confirmed that the HDMI cable you're using works elsewhere?  If so, then a USB-C to HDMI adapter should indeed be the only thing you need here, and I've used such adapters successfully with multiple systems, including multiple generations of XPS 13s.  If Cortana is popping up saying she won't bother you while you're presenting, that suggests that Windows is in fact detecting the display.  If you go into Windows Display Settings (Start > Settings > System > Display), is there any indication that the second display is being detected?  If so, you might simply need to set it to either Duplicate or Extend if it just happens to be set to "Do not use this display" at the moment.

If that doesn't resolve it, I'd make sure your graphics drivers and system firmware/BIOS are both up to date.  The easiest way to do that is to download and install Dell Update, then have it check for updates.  Good luck!

In my case Dell XPS 9380 would not connect to LG24UD58. I was using the LG supplied cable connected though a Oaky type C to HDMI adapter. The display would keep flickering on and off. As suggested in various user communities, I tried installing drivers etc. Nothing worked. What solved the problem was when I got a USB C to HDMI cable 4K, from Uni. Using this I connected the Dell directly to the monitor with no adapter. Everything worked perfectly. So the problem is just the cable. Get the right one.

@Sugatam1  and @AdrianG001  USB-C to HDMI cables/adapters can have interoperability problems with specific combinations of systems and adapters/cables.  That shouldn't be the case, but not everything in tech always works the way it should.  I suspect the reason is that USB-C uses DisplayPort natively for video output, which means USB-C to HDMI cables/adapters have to incorporate an active signal converter chip to switch that signal over to HDMI.  Those seem to cause issues in some cases.  I've helped multiple people here who had USB-C to HDMI adapters that worked on one system but not another even though it should have worked on both, and in all cases the fix was to simply try another brand.  That's why I personally prefer USB-C to DisplayPort whenever possible, because that's a much simpler device thanks to not having to incorporate a signal converter chip.  It can just pass through the video signal the system is already sending.
