Headset mic not working in some apps
As the subject states, I'm having trouble getting the mic on my headset to work. I have a G5 5500 that I got in December, and only recently have started trying to use the headset's mic. The sound comes through just fine in the headset, but the weird thing is that some apps get sound from the mic with no problems, but others get nothing at all.
For example, the default Windows app "Voice Recorder" and an online mic testing site I used (mictests.com) record the sound very clearly (which I can do right now as I type this), but when I try recording content using NIVIDIA Geforce Shadowplay while playing games, there is no sound. Also, when I right-click the sound icon in the taskbar and select "Open Sound Settings" --> "Device Settings" for the mic, I can test the mic, but the only sound it picks up is when I blow or shout into the mic while it is directly in front of my mouth. Even then it says the highest volume it picks up is about 50%.
I have searched many Dell Community posts for solutions of other people who have had this problem, as well as other 3rd-party articles and forums on other websites. I have already tried the following suggested solutions:
- Selected "Headset (with microphone)" upon connecting the headset and being asked about what device I plugged in.
- Uninstalled the "Realtek(R) Audio" driver, and reinstalled the latest driver on the Dell website for my computer (version 6.0.9003.1, A02)
- Uninstalled that driver and reinstalled the optional older versions (6.0.8940.1, A01 and 6.0.8895.1, A00)
- According to a fix I found for the NVIDIA Geforce Shadowplay app, I went to the sound settings and opened "App volume and device preferences" at the bottom. They say to locate the NVIDIA app and change the device from Default to the headset mic. The NVIDIA app isn't even listed. It was only listed one time when I had somehow fiddled with something, but changing it to Headset didn't fix it, and after I tried restarting my computer to see if that would actually have any effect, the NVIDIA app is no longer listed so I can't change the device. (**If I click the mic icon in the right side of the taskbar, there is an "NVIDIA Container" app listed under the section "Allow desktop apps to access your microphone", but there is no option to change settings here.)
Any help with this would be appreciated. Thank you.

No, it's not muted. As I said, the mic is audible when using the normal Voice Recorder app and a website I used for the sole purpose of testing mics.
Also, this is a problem with my computer--not a phone.

Have you checked in "Settings" and then "Sound" to make sure it isn't muted? You may also want to try restarting (turning off and back on) the phone to see if this resolves it. If it doesn't, and it isn't muted or turned all the way down in sounds then try starting the phone in "Safe Mode" and see if it will work in there. If it does, then you know there is something (virus, malware, bad app, etc.) that is on the phone and interfering. If it doesn't work even in "Safe Mode" then you likely need to have it fixed (hardware problem).
To get into "Safe Mode" please do the following.
1. First turn off the phone.
2. Next press and hold "Power" until you see the manufacturers logo on the screen, then release the power button.
3. "Quickly" press "Volume Down" and hold it for few seconds until you see the message "Safe mode: ON" or something similar.
4. If you wanted disable it, simply repeat the steps above, and you should see "Safe Mode: OFF" rather than on.
