Headset - microphone not working

I cannot get my Dell XPS 9360 to recognise an external microphone on my headset. I can get audio output through the device but cannot get the microphone to work - it defaults to the in built laptop microphone.

Things I have tried:

- Connect headset via 3.5mm (combo) jack

- Select the "Headset" option on the Waves Audiomaxx pop up

- Check that the microphone is not disabled, muted etc.

- Updated my Realtek Audio driver via the Dell driver update site to (6.0.8895.1)

- Tried to change the input in Windows 10 Audio settings, but only "Microphone Realtek Audio" is an option

I cannot get other in-line microphone headphones to work either. Any suggestions or fixes!?

are you saying that you don't see your headset mic in control panel>sound>recording?

Correct, there is no specific "Headset" in the recording tab for my Razer 3.5mm headset connection. My understanding is that the Realtek Microphone option should work when I select headset in Waves AudioMaxxx Pro. However, I do see it when i use my bluetooth headphones (not the headset in question).

I can then select the "Headset" option in Waves - which changes the output to the headset. But the microphone is not recognised - no input seen.

Since the XPS-9360 only has one 3.5mm audio jack, that means that only headsets with 4 contact-bands will work. An example is the one from your smartphone that has both stereo-earbuds and a mono-mic.

Hi, not sure if this is solved. I have problem with using 4 ping jack with my xps 9360. There is no way to select external microphone. Any idea how to debug this problem.
