How to make Thunderbolt controller active
If I plug external monitor via USB-C to DisplayPort cable, will it make Thunderbolt controller active so I can check it's firmware version etc.?

Some systems and firmware revisions don't show the controller firmware version unless the controller is active, and that can only be achieved with an actual Thunderbolt device. A USB-C to DisplayPort adapter/cable is a regular USB device. However, even if you can't check the current firmware version, you should still be able to install a firmware update -- and after that you may find that your system always reports the version. Make sure you update your system BIOS and Thunderbolt drivers/software before you attempt the firmware update.

If you open the Thunderbolt software from the apps listing, you should get a Thunderbolt icon in the Task bar hidden icons. Right click that and select settings.. Use the Details button...
