Left Thunderbolt Port not functioning properly XPS 9300

My left Thunderbolt port has been having issues since, well honestly, from the time I've owned this laptop, which has been over a year. I have the monitor plugged into the wall and then the laptop plugged into the USB-C port on the monitor. Charging this way has never been an issue. My laptop always charges via this port. The issue is that my monitor shows "No Signal."  Display Settings show that it detects the monitor and if I go into the Advanced Display Settings, it says "Connected to Intel(R) UHD Graphics." Yet, under that, it says "Display 2 isn't active.

The reason I never called Dell about this, is the issue is intermittent and I keep thinking a new driver fixed the issue. Usually, if I disconnect the monitor and reconnect it a few times, it will eventually work and will continue working until I disconnect it or reboot. Then I have to do the same process again. Sometimes, I don't have to do this at all. It just detects the monitor and everything is fine. Sometimes, I have to disconnect once or twice. A few times, I've had to do it dozens of times. Just when I think there is an issue worth contacting Dell about, I notice there is a driver update, which I apply and then the issue goes away. Every time there has been a BIOS update or a display adapter update, it seems to fix it temporarily, which leads to believe the problem was fixed with a patch. Yet, inevitably, it comes back. In fact, I haven't had any issues with this for the past few months.

And then today, after a reboot, the issue reappears. I have disconnected and reconnected probably 20 times. If I plug the monitor into the right port, there is no issue. I have a dock connected to the right port. If I connect the dock to the left port, everything seems to work fine except for the monitor, which I have connected through an HDMI port on the dock.

I have checked all drivers for updates and changed cables. It's not the monitor because I can switch the monitors around and the issue is always with the monitor in the left port. I cannot get the monitor to detect at all today. Any ideas?

Sadly, many people have had similar issues.

I would recommend:

  • reinstalling Windows with the official dell ISO
  • updating everything
  • trying another monitor/dock

If that doesn't work, then maybe it's the dreaded thunderbolt re-timer issue that plagues certain units and only a motherboard replacement seems to be an appropriate fix. Of course, if you're out of warranty, it might be tricky to get for free...
