Microphone cuts in and out when using Zoom - tech support unable to help. HELP

I bought my XPS13 last month for work which I will largely be doing over Zoom as I'm WFH for the forseeable. When I use Zoom other users can barely hear me, my voice is very quiet and cuts in and out throughout the call.

I've checked the mic and it works fine, installed all the latest updates and drivers, and performed a hardware diagnostics check. I've spoken to Dell tech support and they can't help, and say if it's a software issue rather than a hardware issue my warranty is invalid.

I spent a lot of money on this machine and can't currently use it for the main chunk of my work. I wanted to splash out on a top of the range laptop to avoid these kind of issues, I'm not good at tech-speak and when I search online it seems like a lot of Dell users are having the same problem but I have no idea how to fix it. Argh. Please somebody help me.

I have a Inspiron 3780 that is out of warranty. I recently started using it on a Zoom group call and the other participants said the volume on my voice is fading. I have tried adjusting the microphone settings to no avail. I have observed that other Dell users are having the same problem. What can I do to remedy this problem.

I am using a old Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 for my Zoom calls until I can get my Dell to work properly. Quite disappointed with my Dell laptop performance..

Any update on this driver issue?  I see you posted a test driver on box. does that work?   My users have about 80 xps13s and some of them are starting to report this issue

I have the same problem with my brand new inspiron 3000, and my colleague as well with her inspiron, she uses her own personal MAC for zoom meeting, what is the problem with the Dell Laptop microphone? I have spent a chunk of money on my new laptop, and not impressed so far.

Same issue here   Microphone seems to work fine on some other platforms but not all of them...

Hoping to hear the resolution!!!

Hello,

I have a user with an Inspiron laptop with the exact same problem.

I tried a zoom call with her earlier today and the audio goes quiet every 30 seconds or so and then comes back normal again.

I tried the latest audio drivers from Dell, but it made no difference.

We then tried a Skype call and the audio was perfect.

Have Dell got an answer for this? I appreciate it only seems to happen on Zoom, but there must be a workable solution that can be applied across the Dell range to solve this..

Hi, The December 2020 drivers are the ones that worked in my case. I wish I could tell you why!

I have installed the latest drivers and it makes no difference.

However, I have found a workaround. If you plug headphones into the laptop and carry on using the inbuilt microphone, the problem goes away.

I did a test call on Zoom this morning after installing the latest client and the problem remained. I then got my colleague to put her headset on, using the headphones only and the laptop microphone  and had a 20 minute Zoom call that was perfect sound quality.

I hope this helps ...

Hi, I am having the same issue with my Dell Latitude 3301 when using Zoom. I had perform the driver check and using Dell to scan the latest update driver and installed it. But still the same issue. People just hear my sound cut in and cut out. Please help.

Have you tried my suggestion of using a headset, but using the computer's in-built microphone?

I have done this a for a client and it gets around the problem.

Hi Simon,

I had tried that and it didn't work. Can you let me know specifically which drivers need to be installed.

Thanks a lot.

Hi DannyTan,

My client had the latest drivers installed.

When we tried the headset using the in-built microphone, the problem remained.

However, when we selected the computers microphone and used the headset to hear the conversation, rather than the speakers, the problem went away.

Double check that you are using the computers microphone in the Zoom config and use the headset in place of the speakers and it should work.

I know this combination works, as I was able to have a 30 minute Zoom call with my client, without any of the dropouts. As soon as we removed the headset, the problem came back.

I hope this helps.

Had tried to Zoom again, and apparently the issue still persists. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue?

Thank you! My problem was a little different -- my voice audio would come in a couple of seconds after I started talking so the first part was cut off -- but this fixed it. Much appreciated!

I just bought a new Dell and this is happening all the time. I am a mental health therapist and this is very frustrating.  It didn't happen with my old Dell.
