No sound when using USB-C adapter

I have an xps 13 9360 and a USB-C adapter with ethernet, hdmi, vga and usb.

When the adapter is plugged in I don't get any sound from the laptop.  I have tried using earphones in the earphone jack but there is no sound in those.

What do I need to do to get sound?
