Unable to start the bluetooth stack service

Ever since a couple of weeks ago, every time I start my Dell XPS15 I get a BTTray error message saying:

ERROR: Unable to start the Bluetooth stack service.

When I check device manager, no errors are shown.

I updated the Bluetooth drivers to the latest version, but the error is still there.

Any ideas?

For me, this problem started only recently, on an XPS15 that I've had for over two years, but, thanks to Rowzee's solution, it's now gone away.

It also seems to have cured a recently occurring problem I've had with iTunes - every time I launched iTunes a dialogue box would appear telling me that incompatible Bluetooth software had been detected and warning me that iTunes may not work properly - as it happens it didn't affect the performance of the program, but the message was irritating.  I've just opened iTunes and...no message!!!

My only concern with this is, what exactly was the WIDCOMM Bluetooth driver supposed to be supporting?

UPDATE:  To my utter surprise, this has also resolved a printing issue that has been ongoing for months, which had been investigated by Microsoft's agents, without any luck.

I've encountered the same error. In my case it was really an annoyance - all BT devices worked, but occasional BSOD due to btwaudio.sys. Tried updating drivers, etc. multiple times. Finally found a solution which worked for me (XPS13 Windows 10). I went to 'add / remove programs' and towards the end found WIDCOMM bluetooth driver. I removed it and system has been fine ever since.

yes. this!

thanks @Rowzee

My Bose QuietComfort 35 II headphones would not pair (Bluetooth) correctly on my Dell XPS 13 (Windows 10 Home).  I tried countless methods with no resolution.

Per Rowzee's post... Go to 'control panel' then select 'uninstall a program' and towards the end of the list, right-click on 'WIDCOMM bluetooth driver' and uninstall it... the PC will need to restart.  I removed my headphones from the Bluetooth device list and then went through the pair (Bluetooth) process again and it immediately worked.

The "Rowzee" procedure also worked immediately for my Dell XPS 8900 desktop just as it did for yours! I had tried every bit of advice I could gather from Google with no success. Did not have a restore point old enough to work.  Thanks guys! Martin E.

Yes!   Rowzee's solution worked for my XPS 8900 after over a month of frustration (this same problem started in early June 2018).  It also cured a problem with my SoundBot SB221 headphones where I had to delete and re-pair the headphones each time I wanted to use them.   After removing WIDCOMM from installed apps, the SB221's are ready to use as soon as they are turned on. Thank you  Rowzee!

I have the same issue but do not know how to solve it. I am not an IT expert. Has a solution been found that can easily be applied, please? I have Windows 10 on XPS 15

Hello Rowzee and others

This comment is a heads up for others that have  the same problem as I did.  I couldn't connect my UE Boom speakers to my Dell XPS Win10 laptop.  I spent two days researching online and trying every suggestion including updating drivers etc I could find.  I even rang Dell, Microsoft and Logitech and none found a solution.  At some stage I startign also getting the error "Unable to start the bluetooth stack service" and it wasn't until I found your comment and removed this driver "WIDCOMM bluetooth driver", the error went away and I can now connect my UE Boom speakers.  Thanks so much for your post reply, I very much appreciate it.  I wish you well for 2019.  cheers

I underwent no BSOD, nor any errors save the one titled in this thread, but I thank you nonetheless for your solution of uninstalling WIDCOMM. The startup error has disappeared and my bluetooth PAN as well as iOS device connectivity are fine and error free.

Many thanks, @Rowzee !!

yes i noticed this issue with the battery casing blistering and pushing up the trackpad also... i also thought it was a faulty trackpad and asked for repair and they quoted like $150 :( was going to get another machine but swapped out the battery instead for a smaller size one and added a second SSD in the 2.5" bay that was freed up... so now trackpad is flushed back down and now i have an extra 1TB SSD as a bonus!...
