Video call crashes slows and crashes computer

I very recently got this laptop for school. We've had several Zoom lectures, and despite strong Wifi and closing out of all apps not in use, Zoom will skip audio and freeze my screen throughout the entirety of the lecture. I can't do anything simultaneously with the call as it will freeze so often it is impossible to get any group work done. Even if I only use the Zoom app by itself, the audio and video will still freeze and sometimes give me a "not responding" message.
