XPS 12 Dead Battery

I have a Dell XPS 12 and once I purchased a new laptop I did not charge my old one. I would really like to backup what is on the XPS 12, but I'm not able to turn it on at all because the battery is dead and will not charge. Am I going to have to buy a new battery for this laptop or is there a way to turn it on and back it up without having to buy a new battery? Any helpful advice would be welcome.

Dead battery or not, it will power up on AC only unless something other than the battery is at fault.  Open the case, disconnect the battery from the system board and plug in the AC adapter.  The system should power up.

If it doesn't, there's likely a faulty mainboard - in which case some sort of an external adapter is going to be needed to read the drive. And there are several XPS 12 models, some of which use a different form factor drive.  If you need further assistance, post the model number (9Q23, 9Q33, 9250).
