XPS 13 7390 Mic Problems

Hello everyone!

Got quite a problem here.  I have a brand new XPS 13 7390 with Windows 10 (only about 3 months old) and I've run into a rather frustrating issue with audio.  Working from home, I am on Skype for Business and MS Teams calls all the time, often switching from one to the other back-to-back.  I have tried 3 different headsets now (Plantronics Backbeat FIT 305 - Bluetooth, Bose SoundSport - wired, and Solo Beats - wired) with the same results.  The Bose and Solo headsets are a few years old but the Plantronics is also only about 3 months old.

Randomly, the mic on each of these headsets will just stop working.  Usually this happens after a few calls and sometimes in the middle of a call.  I can hear the others on the call but they can't hear me.  If my laptop camera is on, they see me talking but no sound.  For the wired headsets, I just reseat the jack.  For the Bluetooth one, I have to power cycle it.  (Still shows to be paired and connected.)  In anticipation of a problem, I have reseated the jack or power cycled my Bluetooth headset before a call and do an audio check in either Teams or Skype before the call, but I still run into audio problems.

At this point, I'm fairly sure it's not a headset issue (unless I'm unlucky enough to have 3 bad ones altogether.)  I have run Windows Updates, I have run Dell Command Updates, I have run Dell SupportAssist, I have run the Dell diagnostics online, and I am current on drivers/updates and no issues were found.  I don't know what else to do or try.  I just know I can't be swapping headsets or (un)plugging jacks or power cycling headsets all day anymore.  Any insight/help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you kindly!

I know, I spent hours and hours on this stupid thing, and dell tech support as nice as they were did not help... Keep sharing this solution.

This fixed the issue for me, thank you.  MaxxAudioPro is supposed to enhance the microphone, but was making it clip audio or reduce the level.  The toggle turns it off.  Thanks again!

I am having the same problem.  Brand new XPS 13 7390 bought specifically for use with Zoom and the microphone cuts in and out.  Very frustrating - especially Dell's "not my problem" response.  As suggested here, I turned off the Voice setting in MaxxAudio Pro but unfortunately, it did not solve the problem.  The microphone works fine in other applications.  Any other suggestions?

I have exactly the same problem also.  Same model.  It only occurs on Zoom and RingCentral (same underlying technology).  Choppy, cuts in and out are the common feedback I get.  When I use the PC with MS Teams, no problem.

I have two versions of the MaxxAudioPro installed (not sure why, its a Corporate IT image), but the audio feature is turned off (and can't be turned on...I'm sure thats a group policy rule).  When I use my Poly/Plantronics Savi 720 headset, everything is fine and no issues.  So its the audio processing related specifically for Zoom & RingCentral.

As a workaround, has anyone used an external microphone for hands free/headset free audio?

We're having the same issue.  Mic either doesn't work in ringcentral/zoom, or cuts out in the middle of a call.  The Maxxaudio setting, suggested by others, is already toggled off.

I noted someone else saying they had 2 instances of the Maxx Audio app on their machine. Check to see if there isn't another version. No other ideas at this point, other than a clean install of windows 10 without all the that comes from Dell ...

Amazing. Thanks so much. This has been a problem for me for over a year. Such a simple fix.

p.s. make sure you unplug all external microphones before trying this or the setting won't be toggleable (if that's a word)

Thank you for this solution. It worked for me. I had to stop using my XPS 13 for video meeting and use a clunky, old, slow laptop. Now that this issue is resolved, I can use my much faster XPS 13 again.

BINGO!  That solved the issue for me too. Thanks. Now my voice is not choppy when in Zoom meetings and I can use the laptop without headphones.  Thanks. Sad how a program is suppose to help sound/mic quality but only causes conflicts.

Hello, I am having the same issue. I just bought the laptop 2 weeks ago for work (specifically zoom calls etc) and the mic keeps dropping in and out with most third party apps. I have ProSupport and Dell sent an engineer to my house to change the hardware but the issue still persists. I have toggled the voice settings to "off" in both instances of MaxxAudio Pro on my machine. All drivers are up to date.

Please help or the machine is getting returned and i'll buy another Lenovo to replace it.
