XPS 13 9310 2-in-1 : Can only select 4K 3840x2160 Resolution for internal display when external Monitor is connected

I can only select 4K 3840x2160 Resolution for internal display when I connect an external Monitor. Or connect a 4K Dummy Display Adapter to USB-C-Port. Without connecting external Monitor I only get Choice of 3840x2400 or 2560x2048 or lower resolution options: No 3840x2160 option.

I tried under Win10 and Win11 21H2 completely up-to-date 2022-01-08. The same result. I use newest Intel Iris Xe Graaphics Driver 30.0.100.9955 (2021-10-07).

I this something that has to be implemented into BIOS of "XPS 13 9310 2-in-1" or can it be corrected by the Internal monitor driver (DELL SHP14F8 Display, Version 1.0.0.0 from 2020-05-12)?

I want to use my "XPS 13 9310 2-in-1" with 3840x2160 without the need to connect an external monitor or Dummy Display Adapter and I don´t want to change Resolution everytime when I connect external 4K 3840x2160 monitors.

@LuzieI managed to add the missing resolution 3840x2160 with the Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) v1.5.1 from: https://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU on my 9310 "Non-2-in-1".

Don´t forget to reboot Windows after adding this custom resolution to get it working!

I can't really help, as my XPS-9310 is traditional/clam-shell version and I think the 2in1 version has a different motherboard.

However, I wonder why you would ever want to run your internal display at anything other than it's native/full resolution ? (should say Recommended next to it). Normally, you use that, and use Windows Display scaling.

Dear Tesla1856,

thank you for your answer. But I don´t agree with you. The hardware is capable of doing 3840x2160 resolution. So why can´t I switch to 3840x2160 as I can switch to e.g. 1920x1080. I think this is a driver or BIOS issue which can be cured by Intel or Dell.

If not, I´m not really satisfied with this machine and think over returning it.

Regards

Luzie

As DELL won´t further support me on finding the reason to my question,
(last reply from them was:"That is as per the design, we cannot customize it. If you have further queries/questions, do reach out to us any time. Thank you.").
I posted my question on Intels Support Forums at: https://community.intel.com/t5/Graphics/Why-there-is-no-4K-3840x2160-option-on-i7-1165G7-IrisXe-on-DELL/td-p/1351756/
