If anyone else is having this problem, here is how I managed to fix this: I switched to the 300% zoom, where the file explorer is working, and then changed the view of the files to "List" instead of "icons" and then switched back to my normal 225% zoom, and now it works.
I have to say, it is kind of ridiculous that these types of problems persist in 2018.
