XPS 15 7590, Memory Integrity on causes an inaccessible boot device
Hey all,
Just wanted to report a minor bug with a fresh install on Windows 11 22H2 on XPS 15 7590.
When trying to turn on Memory Integrity under Device Security / Core Isolation, upon next reboot i get a blue screen with Inaccessible Boot Device.
Yes, I'm using the latest Intel Chipset Drivers and XPS 15 7590 firmware.
Yes my Windows 11 is up to date.

Nope. Per my previous reply, "Update January 27, 2023. The platform team told us this morning that they cannot capture these due to the age of the model.". The age of the model trumps the warranty discussion.

Just to clarify step - 2) Open Bitlocker Drive Encryption control panel and "Turn off Bitlocker".
You should wait until Bitlocker has been removed BEFORE rebooting in step 3. This may take a long time to complete depending on drive size, data etc.

So all the professionals (and there are plenty) facing this issue with their XPS 7590 are simply going to be left out and that's it? I work daily with Docker and virtualization as, I'm sure, many of other professionals here and around the globe, and I'm just supposed to don't upgrade Windows anymore from now on? I'm astonished. There is no doubt that if a technician at Dell gets the 7590 they have and they install the same BIOS version as any of us and the same Windows 11 updates they will be able to reproduce the issue. Is it possible to just push a bit more to try to investigate a bit further? I and many here I'm sure, are more than glad to support you with any details or info about software/update versions that have the issue.

I'm in the same boat, as our corporate policies require BitLocker, as well as the BIOS settings that cause this unusable occurrence. I have resolved to stay on Windows 11 22H1 until (perhaps) a 23H1 comes along without issue or (maybe) DELL releases a newer BIOS for the XPS 7590 than 1.19.0. It was a very frustrating three days without a PC, dealing with the UN-usability of the consequences of 22H2 on this laptop. I could not even revert back to an earlier build, nor could I install a clean copy of 22H2. THEN, I found this post. Thanks to everyone with the BIOS suggestions, but here we need ALL the security features enabled. Those suggestions are akin to saying, "The door to my vault is stuck-shut when closed, so I should just leave it open all the time." Not a very usable suggestion for the security stance we require.

that pretty bad. because this isn't a warranty thing. This is about the support to their products... this laptop is only 3 years old and doesn't have support any more... I have seen the XPS series as premium brand until now... I'm definitely convinced that I won't buy another Dell PC ever again.

So Dell essentially won't honor the warranty on my laptop?

I'm not sure about the numbers but this topic started in semptember 2022 so yes, around 5 to 6 months.
The number of users facing the issue is surely high, this topic only has more than TWENTY THOUSANDS views, and I'm sure many are still not aware of the issue just because they didn't update windows 11 or they are still on win 10 or even they have virtualization turned off because they don't need it.
I'm astonished about this lacking of action, numbers are HIGH. Unluckly it is going similar to how it went for the other issue about the pc waking up with super low battery if not on AC even if in reality the battery was still at half charge...

Now that is a worry!
Can someone give me a figure as to how many people are suffering this issue as there seems to be 2 threads running concurrently which both have their origins in the same problem - i.e virtualization settings enabled in the bios preventing the upgrade or clean installation of 22H2 on a XPS 15 7590
And when this was first brought to the attention of Dell - is it about 6 months?
Thanks

I, like others, have always bought XPS machines over the years - I'm on my 3rd one to date.
I find it difficult to comprehend that Dell technicians can't replicate this issue.
Every few weeks I download the latest 22H2 with the Windows media creation tool (in the hope that something will have been done) and install it as a clean installation, firstly deleting all my partitions and then installing it as a new version/installation.
And provided you have the virtualization settings enabled in the bios (there are only 2 to enable!) the critical error will occur, and as others have highlighted, the issue seems to be related to "Enable VT for Direct I/O" being enabled.
I'm wondering how rigorously they have tested. It wouldn't surprise me if they'd forgotten to enable the bios virtualization setting when testing!
I might have another try over the weekend. I will bet I can replicate it and still end up in the same situation - funny that.
Kind regards
m

Dell technicians surely can replicate the issue and are fully aware of it since long.
This issue wasn't discovered in October 2022 when 22H2 was released, this issue was discovered and was already affecting the XPS 7590 in late 2021 when the 22H2 Insider preview was released, and was being discussed since in many channels.
But now Dell saying they are not going to solve it because of the age of the model… lol
Unfortunately every one that bought this model and needs virtualization is probably going to be stuck on 21H2.
Nice work Dell helping reduce E-Waste!

I can confirm that. My Windows 11 decided that it was time for another go with the 22H2 update, but are still getting 2x bluescreen with the stop kode: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.

I guess it's time for a Surface laptop, evidently I should have done that last time.

If you have not already done so, it may be useful to upvote the problem on the Windows Feedback Hub as it only shows 43 upvotes have the same problem? Perhaps it might get someone's attention
Windows Feedback Hub search XPS15 7590
Look for ""can't install update to windows 22H2 on XPS 15 7590
