XPS 15 7590, Memory Integrity on causes an inaccessible boot device

Hey all,

Just wanted to report a minor bug with a fresh install on Windows 11 22H2 on XPS 15 7590.

When trying to turn on Memory Integrity under Device Security / Core Isolation, upon next reboot i get a blue screen with Inaccessible Boot Device.

Yes, I'm using the latest Intel Chipset Drivers and XPS 15 7590 firmware.

Yes my Windows 11 is up to date.

Thanks to the description of Greencat1 I managed to upgrade from Win11 22H1 to 22H2. This is what I did (maybe not all steps are necessary):

  • waited for windows update offering the optional upgrade to 22H2 again
  • disabled bitlocker
  • disabled secure boot in BIOS
  • disabled both VT options in BIOS
  • upgraded to 22H2
  • enabled bitlocker
  • enabled both VT options in BIOS
  • did not enable secure boot

I have enabled both VT options and secure boot in the  BIOS and as long as I am not using any virtualization in the system it boots corectly.

IfI will enable Windows Sandbox for example, next reboot is always a Inaccessible Boot Device BSOD .

Definitely not going to happen before July 2023, unless they release it today.
But let’s hope they realase a fix soon...

Has anyone else seen this article? Is there really a fix in the works? How will this update from Microsoft be administered?

Has anyone tried after the BIOS update released this week?

I have installed the new bios update but it didn't fix this issue

Looks like Dell needs to update that article because we are half way through July and nothing has been released. Correct me if I am wrong, but I assumed this would come as Windows update.

I previously had the update to Win 22H2 available in Windows Update but I never did knowing the issue, since a few months that possibility has been blocked and it says "update to Win 22H2 is on its way" or something like that... so I guess that has been blocked from Microsoft and it will be so until they have a fix ready... hopefully soon

Yeah, I'd expect this to be a Windows Update (bundled in a Cumulative Update, unless classified as an out-of-band Security Update, which is unlikely) if the hardware errata can't be addressed through a firmware update from Dell.

FYI it's not in the 2023-07 Cumulative Update, as I tried re-enabling VT-d in my XPS 15 7590 in the vain hope of getting Windows 11 22H2 working after the 2023-07 CU got installed and my domain login would resolve in an insta-reboot of my laptop

For those interested, LSA was crashing due to Credential Guard being enabled. An LSA crash results in Windows performing an insta-reboot to prevent unauthorised access. Something about 2023-07 CU changed some state related to Credential Guard, as a rollback of the CU didn't restore proper operation (which means the Servicing Stack is broken, because it *should* revert *all* state changes to the system!). Once I disabled Credential Guard, my cached domain credentials could be accessed without LSA crashing. Hope this helps anyone else with a similar problem.

Hi Greencat1, I can do the same that you did since I started to use Windows 11 on my XPS.

But! If i try to install Windows Sandbox for example or in other words get real use of the virtualization in Windows, next reboot is a BSOD, so I need to disable VT in BIOS to be able to boot and then uninstall Sandbox.

Can you please check if you can run Windows Sandbox?

Thanks!

Hi

I have installed all available Windows Updates including the Cumulative Update KB5028254 this morning

I restarted the PC and went into the Bios and ticked ON VT for Direct I/O

so, I have both virtualization settings ON and Secure Boot ON

And guess what? The PC started without any issues!

I restarted and went back into BIOS just to check and "Yes" both virtualisation settings are ON, as too is Secure Boot.

The PC started fine

It appears this issue has been fixed, finally

Someone may wish to confirm this too

Regards,

M

Can confirm it works perfect. Slipstreamed the latest Windows 11 msu (KB5028254) into a .wim file and performed a clean install on an XPS 7590 without issues. All bells and whistles on.

So it seems to be solved.

Hi Greencat1,

Yes, can also confirm that this works for me as well; VT-d is On and KB5028254 installed results in Windows 11 22H2 booting successfully and msinfo32.exe reports that Kernel DMA Protection is Enabled.

Unfortunately for me it re-enabled Credential Guard upon installation so I was once again locked out of my domain account. Disabling Credential Guard again allowed me back in.

Would be interested in hearing what people are seeing in the Windows Security app under Device Security - I get "Standard hardware security not supported" which is odd, because the DG_Readiness cmdlet and other diagnostics commands suggest that this should be displaying "Your device meets the requirements for enhanced hardware security" instead. Might have to do a clean install with KB5028254 slipstreamed to see if there's a difference.
