XPS 15 7590 Not creating automatic restore points for updates, s/w inst, etc.

  • "Turn on system protection" is selected
  • Plenty of disk space is allocated for restore points
  • The Volume Shadow Copy service is configured to start automatically (and is running)
  • The Task Scheduler has a SystemRestore task, but it has no triggers (should it?)
I don't know if this means anything, but most of the General properties are grayed out
Some of the Conditions don't seem to make sense, for example, "Stop is the computer ceases to be idle" (However, I don't have a working system against which to compare these settings)
  • Creating a restore point manually works fine

Again, the Restore Points I want to have automatically created are on installation of software and Dell/Windows updates. I just noticed this issue - restore points haven't worked since the PC was received from Dell.

Also, I don't want to reinstall Windows. I doubt that the Windows installation was broken out of the  box.

What should I check next?

1. What you see in the Scheduled Task for System Restore is what I have.

2. It seems that taking System Restore points has changed over time. Way back when it used to take them every day. I thought it now was taking them once a week if you did not take one manually. However in looking at what I have, it is only showing the last three restore points. Before I did the latest updates, it showed:

a. An "automatic" one taken January 24th.

b. A "Windows Update" one taken January 30th (before a .NET update.)

c. An "automatic" one taken February 9th.

When I ran this latest update, it added a "Windows Update" for that and deleted the "automatic" one taken on January 24th.

I have no idea what schedule they now have for "automatic updates. It appears to be two weeks if no manual updates were taken. I don't know why you would not be getting restore points for Windows updates. Are you sure that that you have protection set for your "system drive"?

Yes, protection is set for the appropriate drive.

I'm going to look into this elsewhere on the Web. Dell indicated that their investigating this would constitute paid support.

I just checked, and an automatic restore point had been created two days ago. I guess if I want restore points before Windows updates, I'll have to do that manually until I figure out why it isn't working.

As I mentioned I have no idea how Windows now determines when to take an automatic restore point. You are better off taking manual ones especially before "Patch Tuesday". You might also want to consider using backup software such as "Macrium Reflect" (they have a free version) to protect your computer.

I'm using AOEMI Backupper. It seems to work well, although I haven't had to use it to restore anything (yet?)

It used to be nice though to have Windows (back in the old days of Windows 7) create restore points automatically to facilitate easily backing up one step.
