XPS 15 7590, touchpad does not respond sometimes

Hello, My touchpad does not respond sometimes. I have to press the touchpad as if I wanted to click to move the pointer. I have the impression that it does this to me especially when the PC heats up a bit. It's been a year since I have this laptop and the problem has been occurring more and more recently. This is getting really annoying because I have to plug in a mouse. Is this a known issue on this model?

I was having the unresponsive touchpad problem on an XPS 15 7590 with the latest BIOS and running Windows 11. The solution that worked for me was to turn off power management (as below) on the I2C HID Device under Human Interface Devices in Device Manager. This setting is preserved after reboots and the touchpad has always worked after resuming from sleep mode since the change.

Add me to the long list of persons who experience this issue.  Like so many others, for me it only happens following wakeup from sleep.  Seems like a driver or BIOS issue that needs to be fixed once and for all.  Are you listening Dell?

I've tried the solution proposed by MarkoOk, which appears to be a viable workaround, but for me there's a hitch.  I go to Device Manager, navigate to System SettingsIntel Serial IO I2C Host Controller (for me there are actually 2 entries, A368 and A369), and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in both entries.  This seems to fix the problem, but only for the current session.  Each time I restart the computer the touchpad issue recurs, and when I go back into the settings I see that both power management entries in Device Manager have become re-checked.  My computer is a Vostro 7590.  I keep my drivers up-to-date, both through Windows Update and Dell Support Assist.  I am running Windows 10 Pro 21H2, BIOS version is 1.13.0 (the most current version available according to Dell).  Any help would be greatly appreciated, as it is a nuisance to have to go to Device Manager and re-disable these settings every time I reboot the computer.

Updating with my experience here, I got support contacting me, waved though months of back and forth emails, they troubleshooted the system remotely, the issue kept happening, they offered to replace the motherboard, with a refurbished motherboard! So I rejected the service, plus the weird thing is that the system does not fail if you disable the power management of the controllers listed on this thread, so they do not understand that the issue is a software issue, not hardware, why would they want to replace the motherboard, I got my XPS new and they want to give me a refurbished motherboard, makes no sense at all!

Went out of my way to create an account to say that I have this same issue on my XPS 17 9710. Hibernating and Unhibernating fixed the issue for now. Dell's quality control has gone out the window. Especially from what I can tell in other posts on this threat, other Youtube videos, Reddit posts, etc. I had issues with my previous XPS 15. I will not be buying Dell again if I can help it.

This solution does not work in my case: all the solutions proposed by Dell representatives did not work either, they were just a waste of time.

This problem is unbearable and bad enough to stop buying from this brand.

Some observations on my end, which I'll continue to verify over time.

If the machine is asleep with the lid closed and woken by opening it, the issue does not occur.
If I sleep the machine via the power button then wake it with the keyboard, the issue does not occur.
If I wake the machine by pressing (not just touching) the power button, the issue occurs.

So, since noticing this, for me it is pretty easy to avoid the issue now.
Also, at least once when the issue occurred I could workaround by closing the lid and opening it again.  Much less obtrusive than signing out or restarting.

If the above is generally true, then it may explain why more owners are not reporting a problem, since there are many ways to wake the machine from sleep.

To recap: Do not wake the machine by pressing the power button.  Use the lid or a keypress.

Alright, I can be the first to post that my post above isn't always true!  Just tried using the power button and did _not_ have the issue, then used lid opening and had the issue.  Then closed and opened the lid and the issue went away.  I hope these "user workflows" can give troubleshooters at Dell some ideas.  In practice, I find that a lid close-and-open will usually unstick the cursor for me.

Note that I have not applied the accepted fix from this thread.

Just encountered this issue out of nowhere after I got the latest updates (including a bios update) using Dell support assist. After waking up my Dell XPS 15 7590 from sleep, touchpad is unresponsive for 1-2 seconds whenever I try to use it. For now I have to retry sleeping and waking up again until the issue is not happening for current session.

Can't believe Dell hasn't fixed this bug since it was first reported 2 years ago. I'm seeing this in several other threads and most suggestions are unofficial hotfixes from community members like disabling power management in Device Manager. I swear this will be my last Dell purchase.

Hi, I actually performed the steps described in this thread yesterday, and haven't been able to reproduce the error ever since. However, there are two places to deactivate IC2 in Device Manager:

IC2 HID Device found under Human Interface Devices.
Intel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - A368 found under System devices.

Try to deactivate the power saving options for both places (I had two devices under each group, four in total).

I can't belive why this is still an issue from Dell. I really hope this keeps my problems away from now on - to early to tell though.

Best of luck!

I can now confirm that for me the solution with deactivation of powersaving mode for both IC2 HID Device andIntel(R) Serial IO I2C Host Controller - A368 solved the issues I had.

Do not waste your time trying to fix this problem with all the procedures suggested in this thread or suggested by the Dell support. None of them actually work: they are temporary fixes that do not solve the problem, just a waste of time.

I did everything suggested here + all the driver updating and installation suggested by the Dell support, plus:

- the touchpad, that is part of the entire top part of the notebook, has been replaced by Dell;

- the motherboard has been replaced by Dell.

The problem is still here and is not related to the machine sleeping or hibernating. It is caused by the screen going off. Indeed, sometimes the touchpad becomes responsive again when the screen goes off and then on again.

There is something inherently wrong with the electronics of this machine. I will never buy an expensive Dell again, they are not reliable.

I have experienced the same problem and it is becoming really annoying.  I have temporarily fixed this problem by holding the power button and giving it a couple of minutes to rest. I also noticed that when it heats up, this problem will start and sometimes when it cools down, it will go away.  Additionally when the computer is plugged in, it heats up very fast and the Dell brick is also very hot.  I try not to keep my computer plugged in and will put a fan on it to help with these issues.  The mouse does not move when the touchpad is touched and swiped.  Also when trying to make small precise movements the mouse never makes it and stutters around in the general area.  This causes problems closing windows or touching bubbles and although it is a touch screen computer, the mouse is still important for some functions.  The touchpad also has major problems when trying to scroll with two fingers or trying to use different three finger swipes in different directions.  The touchpad also doesn't always respond to taps and sometimes when the mouse disappears and I press the right or left mouse buttons hard on the touchpad, it doesn't respond or responds after several touches.
To fix this issue I have deleted the touchpad and the mice and other pointing devices in the device manager.  I've reinstalled both or just one and that would fix the problem initially for some time but now this problem is occurring more often.  I believe something about the computer heating up is causing the processor not to be as efficient.  I've had windows not load on the internet browser saying that there was not enough memory.  This computer is a tank and having many windows open normally caused no problem but now I try to reduce the amount of windows and programs I have open.  I really think that this is a software issue.  The device works fine and can be fixed using resolutions involving software fixes which I don't think would work if this were a hardware issue.  Another strange occurrence is if I deleted the mouse from the mice and other pointing devices option in the device manager, the touchpad would work for an extended period of time and I'm wondering if the touchpad and mouse settings are interacting in a negative way.
One last random thing, I have noticed that different parts of the mousepad have different sensitivities.  The bottom of the touchpad, particularly the bottom left seems to move more accurately with less stuttering as opposed to the middle and top

I have a XPS 13 and have been struggling with this issue for quite a while now.  I tried all kinds of fixes but nothing worked, until this!  The device has a slightly different name on my laptop, but the fix worked!
I have not had the problem since , and it has even fixed using non-dell ac adapters (It used to make the trackpad INCREDIBLY unstable, and even prevent the keyboard from working properly)!

I cant thank you enough for sharing this, you made my laptop actually usable!

this worked for me thank you

This has also worked for my XPS 15 7590.

Deactivation of powersaving mode for any IC2 HID Device option I saw (two of them) and Intel Serial IO I2C (two of them).

I have Intel Driver and Support Assistant installed and notice when it updates certain drivers, the powersaving mode will come back on.  So I switch it back off when that happens.

Also, Windows or Dell updates could possibly switch the powersaving modes back on as well.  So recheck the powersaving settings if the issue begins to occur again and you'll probably find they have mysteriously turned back on.
