XPS 15 9500, camera/webcam terrible quality
Bought latest XPS 15 9500. A theoretically top end machine for $3,500. Very disappointed to realize that the webcam quality is extremely poor. This is result in bright daylight:
Feels like a phone camera from the early 2000s. Unbelievable that Dell penny pinches and adds components that my previous laptop that's 3 years old outperforms by far.

* If applicable to your laptop or monitor, check and be sure the camera plastic shutter is open
* Go here and follow the instructions. If you see yourself, the Laptop camera hardware is functioning
Update the firmware:
UnlockFWProtect
CameraFirmwareUpdatedTool_v1.10.12.zip
Note: These cameras (XPS 9500 and 9510) are working as designed =
Still image 0.90 megapixel
Video 1280x720 at 30 fps
You may also use the "Get Help Now" option at the bottom right to chat with a Dell technician right away.

I do agree. I received the machine yesterday. Everything is fine but the webcam image quality is horrible.
I can't believe that we can have such a bad webcam image in 2020. All low cost computer on the market do better.

We would have do a clean re-installation of the Webcam.
To reinstall the webcam driver, perform the following steps.
-- Close any applications that are currently using the webcam (this may include web pages). Save and close any applications that you are currently working on as the computer will need to restart.
-- Click Start.
-- Right-Click Computer.
-- Click Properties.
-- Click Device Manager in the upper left-hand corner.
-- Click Imaging devices.
-- Right-click the integrated webcam or USB camera.
-- Click Uninstall.
-- Confirm the uninstall process by clicking OK.
-- Once uninstalled restart the computer.
-- The drivers will be automatically reinstalled when the computer is restarted. Then retest

Was this ever resolved? I'm having similar quality on a new machine. I may end up just returning it.

I recently bought an XPS 15 - I like the laptop, but quite disappointed with the webcam quality. I upgraded from an ~8yr old laptop that was cheaper, which had a BETTER webcam. Dell needs to address this.

It's the image sensor they went with... Bottom of the barrel $0.52 sensor. I'm skipping this generation of XPS entirely and keeping with my Macbook Pro for a number of reasons.
1. The trackpad is horrible
2. The software had too many bugs (brightness, sound crackles, fans)
3. The keyboard isn't that great
4. The camera quality
Try again in a few years folks!

Did you ever get this issue resolved? I have the same issue with the machine I just bought. Terrible image quality.

Brand new XPS 15 9500. Webcam is awful and produces a red image.

@evyo No, this is just how bad the camera is on Dell's "top of the line XPS" models. It just boggles my mind they decided to go with such a cheap sensor. A dollar store webcam has a better picture!!! How is this premium again?

Totally agree, this laptop isn't cheap, and the fact that this camera is hot garbage, is very disappointing.

I bout a new XPS 15 and the camera image was terrible. After Dell rebuilt my new laptop in a failed attempt to fix it they sent me a new device. The image quality was just as poor. Dell should be embarrassed to provide such poor image quality on a high end device, particular when we have to work virtually via zoom, teams ect.....

I'm trying to think of a product I have in my house with a camera that is worse than this one... and for the life of me, I can't come up with one. This includes an old Samsung phone, a generic Chinese tablet, and a 6 year old, base model, sub $400 Lenovo Flex 3 I bought on sale. I just can't believe it's this bad. I just assumed that a flagship laptop purchase would have an impressive camera and had I known it was this bad, I would definitely have bought something else. Unfortunately in today's world and because of the apps we use, camera quality is now a top priority on laptops and pushes this laptop to the bottom of any consideration list. Not happy with the Dell XPS15 9500 (2020) camera. I have yet to try the uninstall driver recommendation I read in this post, but I'll try that... I regret not doing my usual research and due diligence in comparing products and reading reviews before making this (very expensive) purchase.

This webcam is disgusting. They won’t admit it when you call. They keep telling you to install drivers and redo every install you have.

Yeah, seems like a bad joke on a really new machine with a camera this poor quality. An old cellphone camera will probably be better than this.
