XPS 15 Hinge Issues (widespread?)

I've seen several posts about this issue but would like to know just how widespread it is.

I have 2 XPS 15 laptops (a 9560 and a 9570) both have an issue with the left screen hinge. The 9560 got so bad that the screen can't be opened anymore and the laptop ha. and it bent the bottom cover. The 9570 is headed in that direction but not that bad. I have a colleague with a 9560 that had the exact same problem. My business has used exclusively Dell equipment up to this point and while we have never had a problem with any of our desktop workstations or monitors, the XPS 15 laptops that have given me countless headaches.

Anybody else have this problem? How did Dell address it? and has the problem been addressed in a newer version of the laptop?

Really love the specs of the XPS 15 and the display quality but not inclined to ever get another at this point

Well. Now you know what to do once you get your laptop sent back to you. LOL.

I agree with the last part. It's completely unacceptable. I'm definitely looking into it.

My 9550 has been clicking at the left side of the hinge for a few years now. I ignored it for a while, although disappointing, until the display started to flicker when opening. I can imagine the ribbon cable is now being affected or disconnected by the ongoing clicking over the years. Sad to see i've found the issue with no better option than to replace the palm rest assembly which appears to be a disassembly of the whole laptop according to Dell's service manual.

Hi,

I am having same issue with my XPS 15 9560.

The hinge is broken. I have Premium Support covered and yet when I reported the issue, I was told that it's not covered. I am seeing messages on this topic where this issue has been covered.

I am not sure on what basis I have been denied the coverage.

Appreciate if Dell can take a look at this and get back to me at earliest.

Same problem. Also on the left side. I've been trying to get this part sent to me so I can fix it but it has been impossible. The problem with the hinge has put stress on the screen and has ended up also cracking the glass.

The only option I am given by DELL is to send my computer to them, but I don't want to. First, I can easily fix it myself. Second, I need my computer with me for work. Third, I just don't want to pay them for this, it's ridiculous. I should be allowed to fix my own things, it's sad to accept you are forced to go through hoops and loops and I refuse. I can fix it, I just need the part, and they won't send it to me.

I love my XPS15, but well, I also love not being forced to pay for services I don't need. From 'happy customer' to 'I am not buying DELL again'. Congrats DELL.

I had to do the same thing but used Super Glue on the thin metal chassis piece that used to be glued to the plastic piece. After that, I loosened the hinge nuts about 1 1/2 turns (held tight by a lock washer) so the hinge would require much less force than it did before. Works perfect now and should hold better than from the factory. Really bad design on something so important like the hinge that is literally cycled 1,000's of times in the life of a laptop.

Hi

How much Dell quoted you for this hinge repair?

Thanks.

Hi! unfortunately I never accepted their repair and didn't get the full quote. But this is what would have cost me to have it looked at (excludes labor and parts if I am not mistaken):

$39 mail-in diagnostics + $19.99 express turnaround + tax
$39 mail-in diagnostics + tax
$149 + parts + tax

Same issue with my Precision 5510. Wonderful laptop - but this problem has become progressively worse and now to the point that it caused damage to my DC socket, which in turn caused a power fault that has made my hard drive to pack up and data irretrievable.

I am in the market for a new laptop and there is NO WAY i will be purchasing a Dell. Unbelievable that so many people have had the same issue over the years and Dell have not addressed or advised on a resolve.

GOODBYE Dell.

Hello Asus!

I had this problem on my laptop and got it fixed via a local PC repair shop. My wife also had this trouble on her laptop. So I believe this is a serious defect on the XPS laptops. These are supposed to be premium laptops and we paid $2000 for each laptop. The lack of quality control is disappointing.

Hi,

I've had this issue and just fixed it completely.
I found that computer repair shops were generally unwilling or unable to properly fix it. I went to 4 shops in total:
- Two of them said to just leave it and not fix it, and that they couldn't fix it.
- One said they would glue it back together which seemed like a terrible solution.
- One of them said that they could fix it but the parts would take a month to arrive and that they weren't sure how much it would cost. Even though I still wanted them to fix it, they became slow to reply and didn't seem interested at all.

So I concluded that most places don't want to fix this issue.

But, you can do it yourself. It's not that hard. It just takes a while.

Buy a new or used palmrest. You have to completely replace it. I bought a good condition used one for about $70 USD.
This involves disconnecting and sometimes removing quite a few things (WiFi, Keyboard, speakers etc). Basically the entire computer is attached to the palmrest. It's scary at the beginning but turns out not to be so hard. Just make sure you keep all your bolts in separate labelled bags or containers so that you know where they go when you put everything together again.

I watched this video to help me understand the disassembly process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDBfTjujSZE&t=508s
After you have disassembled it, you should be fine to put it back together again.

I now have a normal XPS 15 9560 again that I can carry around and not have it almost fall apart every time I close or open it! And all fixed for so cheap! What a relief.

HI Jeswd! Thanks for sharing your solution. I have the same laptop and the same problem. I have also looked into fixing it myself. But when I looked for palmrests for my XPS15 9560 I found that there are many different palmrest models (Y2F9N, 5DY4C, 4X63D, etc) with slight differences. I wonder how did you find the right palmrest model for your laptop?
Thanks!

3 weeks ago I had the same hinge problem with my Dell XPS 15 9570. The plastic from the back of the palmrest broke off, the screw that holds the bottom cover to the palmrest on that corner stripped off. I just found a brand new palmrest online for $40 shipped. I'll be getting that next week to swap everything over. At this point, I think I'm going to sell my XPS 15 and replace it with the new Macbook Air.

Here's the link to the new palmrest for the 9570 if anyone is interested:
