XPS 15 Touchpad intermittent problem - additional info
Further to an earlier post I made (Solved: XPS 15 TouchPad/ClickPad Intermittent Problems - Possible Workaround - Dell Community), I have some more info (the post is frozen so I can't add this to the original post).
Firstly I'm convinced that the touchpad freezing intermittently is something to do with the gesture recognition on touchscreen variants of the XPS 15 (I have a 7590 with the UHD OLED touchscreen).
The gesture recognition uses Microsoft's touchpad driver for both the touchpad and the display, rather than separate drivers as the gestures on both the touchpad and the screen are the same, which makes sense. However, the touchpad becomes unresponsive when the screen is set to power off after a few minutes in the Power Options applet. It doesn't happen every time, but does happen if you allow the screen to power off frequently enough (I have my timer set to 5 mins).
I've coincidentally been trying out Intel's generic graphics driver (30.0.101.1994 currently) and realize that the touchpad problems haven't re-occurred while I've been using that driver rather than the Dell version (27.20.100.9664).
This morning however the touchpad problem re-occurred for the first time in ages so I checked the graphics driver version and found that Windows Update had replaced it with the Dell version a couple of days ago.
So I'm reinstalling the Intel one now and will specifically test out whether the touchpad problems occur when using it.
As regards compatibility of the generic Intel graphics driver, I hadn't noticed any problems and although you do get a warning when you install it that any manufacturers customizations will be removed, there's also information on Intel's website that customizations remain intact (see https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000058958/graphics.html).
I have spoken to Dell support about it and their only suggestion was to replace the touchpad, which shows they didn't understand the problem at all. Hopefully someone from Dell will read this. It's an annoying problem and easy enough to reproduce.

The problem occurred again with the Intel driver, so that's not it. Back to setting "Turn off the display" to Never, and relying on a screensaver. The screen stays turned on though.
