That could be BIOS related. If the BIOS is not seeing the sound device then Windows will not.
Assuming no hardware failure:
Try a BIOS reset (note any customized settings before you do the reset as they will have to be reentered after the reset). Access the BIOS (F2 at power on) and when exiting one of the options is reset to factory.
If that doesn't fix it, a CMOS memory reset would be my next suggestion. That's a little more involved.
