XPS 9380 ssd physical size

I've got a wimpy 256GB ssd which is nearly full after only a year or so. I knew this was going to happen when I got my XPS so this is no surprise.

I want to upgrade to a WD Blue SN550 1TB ssd. I understand from the forum that Dell packed the 9380 with either a 2230 or 2280 M.2 PCIe Gen 3 x4 ssd and that there are two different heatsinks neither of which is compatible with the other sized ssd. The WD Blue is a 2280.

I read on the forum that the 128GB ssd used in an XPS 13 is a 2230 but what size is the 256GB?  I could find this out easily by taking the back off of the XPS but maybe somebody out there has already done this and knows the answer.

If the 256GB is a 2280, swapping out the 256GB for the 1TB should be pretty easy - except for the OS software cloning issues discussed elsewhere on this forum.

On that note, should I favour attempting to clone the 256GB onto the 1TB or should I use the OS recovery method after installing the 1 TB?

After talking/chatting with 5 different techs at Dell I finally got the answer: The 256GB ssd is 2280.
