The CPU will dynamically adjust to the load by default, so a default/balanced power setting will do just fine. "Power saving" mode on a 17" notebook is something akin to "economy" mode on a V8 powered Mustang -- it's relative. Yes, you can get "better" MPG through conservative driving -- or better battery runs by disabling the discrete GPU when it's not needed, but no 17" system is going to provide spectacular battery economy, any more than a V8 sports car will provide spectacular fuel economy.
Ok, I appreciate the help. I know I wasn't going to get great battery life, just wanted to see what I could do to extend it, without sacrificing build times. I wouldn't care if everything else slowed down some, but not that. I'll just stick with the balanced then.
When not on battery, is using the ultra performance not a good idea? I heard it's not great for the cpu because it gets so hot.
