I have a very similar case for my XPS 9510 where the mouse appears to lag and become delayed on the screen when using the trackpad. This happens at least once a day for around 15 seconds, I can still use the left and right click but the mouse is very delayed.

I just received the same model 1 week ago. My touchpad is OK, but I like to give Dell XPS a bit of advice.

Compare to Apple 2015 Macbook Pro, Dell XPS touchpad is so big but it is not as user friendly as Macbook Pro's touchpad. It can't do right or left mouse click at any spot. XPS touchpad allows right mouse click on the right side, left mouse click on the left side, But Macbook Pro, it can click any spot. So I end up using the mouse.

There were several reviews on YouTube indicating that touchpad quality control problems they had originally noted on the 9700 were also present on their 9710 model, so this is one of the first things I checked when I got my 9710 delivered Aug 31. Sure enough, I immediately noticed that, while tracking (and multi-finger gesturing) seems ok, left clicks were often lost. "Lost" here means that you would feel the click of the trackpad but the action you attempted on the screen (e.g. button click, cursor repositioning) would not happen.

This laptop is primarily used as desktop replacement so I regularly use a mouse and I am taking a little time to check that all the other functionality of the laptop is ok before I complain to Dell about it. Just now I tried a few clicks (left and right) and got no response to either despite physical click feedback on the pad. I then used the mouse to right click on the desktop and got the usual context menu immediately, returned to the touchpad and right clicked with about the same amount of force, and the context menu appeared as it should, which is weird if the problem is purely mechanical.

Still, not my job to determine exactly what the problem is. However, I sure wish I could hook up my Apple Magic Trackpad to the 9710, that thing is a joy to operate. Hmm, there is a github (mac-precision-touchpad) project that may just allow me to do that!

All,

Open the online XPS 17 9710 Setup and Specifications PDF, pages 7-8. There are notes about the touchpad which might apply here.

Four day old XPS 17 9710 32 GB 3069 GPU and the touch pad has gone nuts.  It gets stuck in left button press and tapping anywhere no longer works. If I touch the touchscreen it unlocks and the touchpad works for a couple of minutes then gets stuck again.  A mouse works  but the touchpad has a hold on the left click so the screen will not shut off after five minutes or if you close the lid, and it will never go to sleep. Had to disable the touchpad in settings so that the laptop would work normally. Second XPS with an issue.  Should have learned from my first experience with an XPS 13 which had a constant clicking noise from the speakers.  Dell wanted me to send it in for repair but at the time I could not afford to be without the laptop for two or three weeks. I disabled the speakers in the bios and they don't work to this day. This time though I will get this expensive XPS repaired because I just spent three days installing and configuring a bunch is stuff and i don't have time to waste in doing it all again. Very sad that Dell has had this issue of faulty touchpads since the previous version (watch. YouTube reviews) and that it has not been corrected. And yes, I have reinstalled drivers. I have been a customer from the time that Dell was called "PC Limited" but this may be my last Dell.  Too many issues.

Update:

Installing driver/firmware update "ELAN Touchpad Firmware Update Utility" from Dell fixed it.

  • I got same issue, mine is 2 months old only but touchpad no longer working properly. I disabled it while waiting support to resolve it.

    What happening is:

First When touchpad enabled, it try to click randomly by it self and move pointer by itself even no mouse is connected or touch screen is disabled. Even at startup diagnostics, touchpad is not working properly.

    Now its completely not working.

Using external mouse or the touchscreen works fine.

I wish you had a 9710 to see the problem. I have had Dell computers and laptops forever.. This is by far the worst touchpad they have ever put in a computer. I had my replaced from Dell within the first couple of weeks and the new one is just as bad. I know how to use a touchpad... any other computer's touchpad works far better than the 9710. It is worthless!

When you go to install it states that it is not compatible with Windows 11!
