XPS overheats when in lap

XPS 15 9500 overheats when positioned on a lap because the design (air intake on the bottom) prohibits airflow when positioned on a lap. Does Dell have alternative products or plans to change the design? After all, it is called a laptop.

Buy a lapboard. Today's computers need plenty of ventilation.

This issue is not unique to your model of laptop. Modern laptops generate a lot of heat that must be safely dissipated. Resting a laptop on your lap, pillow or other soft fabric surface is a bad idea. If you want to use it in that position, get a hard tray or a laptop cushion that has a hard work surface on top.

I had to replace failed drives in a client's laptop twice. Later, I saw him using his laptop resting on a pillow, and suddenly I understood why the failures occurred.

It's not only on laps that they overheat. I have the same model and only use it at my desk. The processors often reach 100 degrees and each core will fluctuate between 60 degrees to 100 with the fans running frequently, while not under strain. Dell has tried to fix the issue by slowing down the processor and telling me this behaviour is by design. The bottom of the laptop is very hot to the touch, not just warm. I believe left unchecked it will not last as long as my previous Dell.

Heat and ventilation are issues with pretty well all modern thin laptops. You might want to do what I did.

I took a strip of lumber, about 1.5" wide x 3/4" high, and the length equal to the width of my laptop. I chiseled two notches that are the right size to hold the rear feet of the laptop. The rear of the laptop sits in those notches, propping up the rear by almost 3/4". That provides a little better ventilation underneath the laptop and makes it easier for the fan to draw in air via the vent on the bottom.
