Xps17 9720 wont boot

I have dual boot installed on my system(windows+ubuntu). Last night I tried to switch from windows to ubuntu, but the system would not boot. Im not sure if windows tried to do an update during the reboot because I was away at that moment.

Now, ubuntu gives "gave up waiting for root file system device error". Windows gives "inaccesible boot device" BSOD. Also, windows and ubuntu are installed to different SSDs.

When i look at the BIOS logs, i see "firmware update is failed messages, along with firmware update is successful messages, which is confusing.

I updated the bios from 1.9 to 1.10 and it did not help. Anyone else had this issue?

Well, it's pretty clear that it has something to do with your Ubuntu dual-boot. Also, I really doubt many users will have this need/config/etc ... so I thought I would try to help.

If you are installing a BIOS-Firmware, I suggest you pay close attention. In the BIOS, Turn OFF UEFI Capsule Updates to prevent BIOS updates from Windows-Update.

I'm not sure what would happen if you tried to upgrade your BIOS from inside Windows on a Dual-Boot system like this. I would assume it would write to UEFI-Environment space (like normal) and execute/flash on next reboot after Posting.

Then it would try to boot a drive.

And AFAIK:

a. Even if it says SecureBoot is off, it's not really (not on these new systems)

b, Even if the dual-boot uses two separate SSD, I think it still bounces off of the Windows-drive before booting Ubuntu on the second SSD.

Dear Fellow Dell User

I have read carefully Tesla's answer and will try his expert opinions in my similar case. I want however to share something similar, related to another post here, has been similar, but given that I rarely  boot, i find it hard to detect what is wrong.

I will be brief. Turn on the machine as linux in dual boot (xps 9710) and it stops booting by not finding the root partition, ie it passed through plymouth, or sometimes it get stuck on grub.See images.

Go Ctrl-Alt-Del and the machine boots in linux! YES! Now here tesla user talks about the UEFI space and this could be the case. Reboot linux asap and it goes there with no problem. And again. Then choose the windows booter and the machine boots in windows. When windows are told to reboot in linux, this procedure sometimes fails. The logs by linux get me pci routing failure. See images. However, some times windows tries to boot and it just reboots.

When my machine used to be in the server room with the 1.09.bios it used to be warm but had no such issues but again I had another motherboard and disk from now.
