I have the same issue (different model) and it began after a BIOS update around 2/25/2020. However, my BIOS version is 2.13.0 (the release date is 11/14/2019 in spite of it being updated on 2/25/2020).

Are you running Windows or Linux?

Where do you get the updates from?  I notice Dell's website only has .exe's.

Actually, I'm not that confident about the bios update anymore. I thought it was an automatic bios update, since, on reboot, the computer stopped before grub was loaded and messages about updating the bios were displayed (on the black screen with Dell logo, before grub loads).

However, now that I check my update history with 'less /var/log/apt/history.log" I don't see anything indicating any bios update around Feb 25. And the release date of the bios was Nov 14, 2019.

How did you confirm that your bios was updated?

The bios updates are automatic via Ubuntu's repositories.

I am considering finding the version that I had previously, and just installing that again.

I think it must have been on Feb 20. I see a bunch of upgrades that day (fwupd & fwupdate-signed ).

The bios is upgraded via UEFI Capsule updates described here: https://www.dell.com/support/article/en-ca/sln171755/update-the-dell-bios-in-a-linux-or-ubuntu-environment?lang=en.

Did you successfully roll back to a previous version? Also, how old is your computer? Mine is from 2017, but it worked great until this bios update.

I saw it imaging my bios. And I reverted, and it's running smoothly once again.

kallek,

* On our XPS 13 9360 driver page, BIOS 2.13.0 was released on January 14, 2020. Prior to installing BIOS 2.13.0, what BIOS version was installed?
* Have you tried to downgrade from BIOS 2.13.0 to an older version?

Hi,

I tried installing BIOS vesions 2.8.1, 2.9.0, 2.10.1, 2.11.0, 2.12.0 and the latest, 2.13.0.

However, when installing the BIOS I get an error during the update of the management engine (error 0x00002236). This happened for all the BIOS versions I tested.

I checked my hardware by running the pre-boot diagnostics (part of the BIOS software). The only error detected was from the battery, which makes sense given that it is getting old. Everything else is error-free.

The slow-down. Everything is slow. Logging in takes a lot of time, as does starting a file browser and selecting a few files. The screenshot below shows CPU-usage when I only have a terminal open.

The problem began around the time when I updated the BIOS to version 2.13.0, but it doesn't go away when I revert to earlier versions.

Hi,

Same problem here: XPS 15 9550, Ubuntu 16.04 & 18.04 sluggish, fan running, keyboard elevated temp

The update request for bios 1.13.1 showed up a couple of weeks ago under Ubuntu 18.04.

I see a high CPU load in the graphical view of the system monitor but I can't pinpoint the process actually causing it. Looked through the bios setting, nothing interesting there. Please advise!

@droidus91 : To which bios did you revert? Did you fix it?

I had the same issue when Ubuntu18 upgraded the firmware to 1.13.1. Downgrading to 1.12.0 did not help. So I downgraded one more time to 1.6.1 (as I had before 1.13.1) and now it works fine as before. My best guess is one of the latest firmware versions changed the fan algorithms in BIOS and they did not run fast enough when required (so CPU was overheated and their frequency is decreased, but not sure).

On 1.13.1 the temperature reached 99 degrees on a Hangouts call (unfortunately I did not save sensors output). Now it is not higher than 70 degrees on 4K video.
