Battery power level not recognised

The Inspiron 8600 works on battery, just that it can't see how much power the battery has. As such the battery indicator light is steady orange. If I'm not careful, the laptop just goes dead with no warning. The battery pack is a few years old but it still lasts well over a half hour. Does this sound like a case of failing battery or more a laptop problem?
