win xp admin password
My uncle's Dimension 4300 got seriously messed up. He can't boot, and it gives him this error message:
Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
So I searched Microsoft's Knowledge Base to find out how to fix that (KB article Q314477). I have to use the recovery console, and I can boot into that fine using the win xp cd. The problem is that it asks for an administrator password, but to my knowledge he never set one up. From the moment he got this computer, he could just turn it on and it would boot into windows w/out prompting him for one. I assume that means he's always been logging on as an administrator, since he could install software and all that. So, is there any way I can get past this password prompt? I've tried just pressing Enter in case one was never set, but that doesn't work, and like I said, he was never asked for one.
Remember, I can't boot his machine, but I _can_ take out his hard drive and plug it into my winXp machine as a slave. I tried that earlier to see if I could just copy that file from my hard drive to his (which didn't work - his file is corrupted). So I could probably change his registry settings using my computer.
