NIC TROUBLE

running a dell pentium 1 166mhz with 64 meg of ram with windows 98se freshly installed after a reformat of the hard drive.  installed a belkin pci ethernet card.  windows recognizes it, i install the drivers from the belkin cd and everything goes off w/o a hitch.  the device appears in device manager with no conflicts and functioning properly.  no question marks, exclamation points or red x's.  BUT in TCP/IP the card does NOT appear, and it does not appear in start-run- winipcfg.    i uninstalled, reinstalled 50 times.  i even tried it in another pci slot (i have three open ones).  i've spent time on the phone with comcast (no help) and with belkin.  belkin says there is a problem with my OS.  they say tcp/ip is not installed.  but it does appear in the network section of device manager.

question is, is it possible that tcp/ip is NOT correctly installed ?  DUN is there and works well to dial in to an isp.  OR is this just some weird incompatiblity and i should take the card back and get another?  is there a way to check if TCP/IP is installed and working properly?

HELP!

being new to all this, how complex is this to do?  also, does this mean that i cannot use this card to connect to the internet?

forgive my ignorance.  i would really like to CURE this, not just mask the symptoms.  if you feel the card is the problem, i'll scrap it and get another.  if you feel the OS is the trouble, i could do a re-install of windows.  there is NO soft ware on this machine other than windows 98se, necessary drivers and the NIC.

can tcp/ip be tested, or, by virtue of the fact that it does show up, can i assume it is there and functioning properly.  reason i ask is b/c one other time with a fresh install to a reformatted hard disk, DUN did not install properly for whatever reason.  it didnt appear in any of the places you'd expect to see it, and, needless to say, i couldnt dial up to anything.  this was fixed by reformatting (again) and reinstalling.  oddly enough, it was this very same machine.  the second reinstall of windows (this latest one) i used a different windows 98se cd.  the first install was done with the system recovery cd that came with my dimension 4100 pIII 733mhz.

If all you are going to do is create an internal P2P network, use NetBuei.  All Microsoft products can read that.  Give the troublesome NIC a static IP address.

ping worked great.  tried that a while back.  i wanted to set up a simple two machine network for filesharing, but i have been testing the card for functionality  by plugging in the cat5 from my cable modem.  also of note, when i go into winipcfg, no only does the NIC not appear, but there is no ip address.

Ping the NIC at 127.0.0.1 and see if you get a response.  What do you intend to do with this machine?

Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and there is a Section on the Left side to Add /Remove Windows Components.  Scroll thru that list and add networking Service and TCP/IP should then be available.  A reboot will be necessaey.

With TCP/IP bound to this network adaptor - you should be then be able to select Properties, and statically set an IP address for back to back communications. Use 10.0.0.1 with mask of 255.255.255.0 and default-gateway of 10.0.0.10. The repeat process for 2nd PC.

    PC-1 Summary = 10.0.0.1 /255.255.255.0 / 10.0.0.10

    PC-2 Summary = 10.0.0.2 /255.255.255.0 / 10.0.0.10
