I'm connecting a 2nd hard drive to my system.  The ribbon was marked HD1 and HD2, so I connected the 1 plug to my old drive and 2 plug to the new one, then rebooted.  The system detected the new hardware, but nothing shows up in explorer.  Next I set the bios to know about the 2nd hard drive, doesn't show up in explorer.  Next set the HD1 to master, and the HD2 to slave, and it still doesn't show up in explorer.  I know I'm going to need to format it, I think, but until it shows up somewhere with a drive letter there's nothing I can do.

 

I'm not much of a hardware person, duh, so what am I doing wrong or what else needs to be done? 

 

I have a Dell 8200 Dimension.  The master is a western and the new drive is a segate.  Dell said it was compatible when they sold it to me, so that shouldn't be a problem.
