HD Noise (clicking)
I have an Inspiron 5100 with Windows XP Professional and I've already had to order a replacement hard drive once since the one it came with stopped working (froze on the Windows loading screen with repeated clicking noises).
The new one is a 30 GB Fujitsu (the one before it was a Hitachi, if I'm remembering the name correctly), and it seems to be working fine. However, I've noticed a clicking similar to the one that failed on me. I know that all hard drive manufacturers are different, but I just want to assure that the noise is normal. The noise occurs when the HD is idle anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes (I have "Turn off hard disks" set to "Never," but Standby is set to 15 minutes), and I noticed the sound when I'm turning off the computer as well.
Because of that, I'm thinking that it's probably the HD head repositioning itself in some way (I'm not familiar with the workings of a hard drive) or something like that. Normally, I wouldn't be asking this, but with what happened with the last hard drive, I just want to make sure.
