Registry Cleaners revisited

I realize this subject has been beaten to death in this board, but Gary Woodruff over at aumha posted a particularly good response today to the question "So - What are the facts, what is the evidence?" on this topic, with the perspective of one who was there from the beginning:

"I sat in Summit sessions at Microsoft as Redmond on this subject starting almost 10 years ago. I was a regular user of Registry Cleaners, first Microsoft's own SCAN REG ...

... My final word is they do no real good, they expose one to the chance of a serious problem and if no Registry backup has been made possibly a reinstall of the OS. Though I was a past promoter or Registry Cleaners when they were helpful I categorically recommend they not be used with WinXP or Vista by anyone that do not suffer from the orderliness compulsion."
