after my computer boots to the black screen, before the logon scree, Check disk automatically runs. There are 5 stages, the 4th stage verifying file data, during that stage, at 14th percent, it stays like that for a long time. it keeps doing that after i restart. please help, i am a college student and have a 10 page report in the comptuer.
it seems that u have clicked on the chkdsk option for ur disk, restart ur pc in safe mode, and u may probably boot it normally there. then restart. ciao!
I've just done a fresh install of the Windows 2000 (with SP1) using the Dell supplied W2K reinstall CD on my Dell Latitude L400 (with A09 Bios). But when the system reboots to continue with the setup process (after the Windows 2000 files have been successfully copied to the harddisk), the screen just freezes at the Windows 2000 welcome screen. I've repeated this process for 3 times with the same problem. What did I do wrong? Can anyone help?
i tried doing safe mode, at first it freezes after i choose it, then the menu (where safe mode is) freezes after i try it again. i did not select checkdisk after restart. how do i fix bad sectors?
First I would stop it running automatically (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt) run the following command: CHKNTFS /D This should restore CHKDSK behaviour to its default/normal behaviour (regardless of whether your drives are fat or ntfs).
Since Windows thinks there is a problem you will then have to command it to run once instead of automatically.
Go to All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt. At the prompt type chkdsk and it will run in read-only mode and tell you if there are any errors. To force it to run during the next reboot if there are any errors use "chkdsk /f" or "chkdsk /r". The /r switch is more thorough and will check for and mark any bad sectors.
I am having exactly the same problem. Computer goes straight into chkdsk when loading windows xp pro and it freezes so I can not go to Start menu and the command prompt to turn it off. Is there a way of turning the chkdsk off from the recovery console? it says chkntfs /d is not a valid command
