WinXP: "My Documents" folder opens VERY slowly...

Just after the announcement of this new "MyDoom" virus, I recieved TWO "Mail Undeliverable" emails... I hadn't sent any emails recently, so I had my suspicions that this was that virus. I deleted the emails, but in order to do so, I had to click on them, and in doing so, opened up the email in the 'preview pane'. I didn't click on any attachments, I NEVER do..even if I know the person sending them..... I immediately closed Outlook and updated my virus protection and scanned my entire computer.
Everything was working fine, until I rebooted after the scan. Now, I seem to have some problems.

Things work fine until I try to open "My Computer" and more specifically "Documents and Settings". I do a ctrl-alt-del to look at what is eating up my resources, and I notice that "EXPLORER" and "SVCHOST" are going BONKERS! My CPU usage goes from 100% down to 40% than back up to 100%, down to 2%..etc... this is while NOTHING else is running mind you. This will happen until I get a "program not running" message next to "My Computer" in 'applications' on the task manager, and close it. Then things go back to normal. This keeps happening. It has never happened before. I am quite nervous.

Per. help in another forum, I ran Hijack This and they looked over the results and said that I was 'clean' except for one item which wasn't a big deal. Following their advice I downloaded guards against spy and malware.

I also started the computer up in "Safe Mode" and things opened fine, the way they used to before the virus scan.

As you can imagine, this is very frustrating and annoying and completely wastes time.

Also, could you give me advice on what this might be and how to solve it?
Thanks.
