AGESA 1.2.0.2 to fix AMD USB issues?

Is Dell going to provide bios updates for all R10 boards that contain a fix for the various USB issues with Ryzen 3000 and 5000 series CPUs in 500- and 400-series motherboards (i.e., X570, X470, B550, and B450) and consist of random dropouts for USB-connected devices. The complaints encompassed several different types of USB devices, including unresponsive external capture devices, momentary keyboard connection drops, slow mouse responses, issues with VR headsets, external storage devices, and USB-connected CPU coolers.

Would also like to know. This issue renders my Reverb G2 useless and I'm sure there are thousands who have similar issues. MSI and Asus have rolled it out, so when will Dell?

Have to say I'm very disappointed with both the lack of any reply to this issue on this forum and the complete lack of knowledge Dell technical support have. A simple search on the Internet will reveal the widespread issue, yet still they think it is the fault of the device connecting and not Dell's.

I called AMD directly and they said they have released the update to individual manufacturers and it is upto them to distribute it with MSI and Asus doing so a few weeks ago.

When will Dell?

I am so frustrated and disappointed by Dell my ideal solution is I return the pc and go with another company. I have had it 2 months so I know I am fighting a losing battle to do this, but at the very least they should be able to provide competent support.

For sure Dell will not do it for the R10 3000 series, because it will give us the possibility to put a 5000 series processor, on a so called by Dell, incompatible motherboard. they will never update the AGESA on those.

I have suggested to Dell TS that we explore the possibility of forcing PCIE 3.0 but I do not believe that is possible, at least at user level. Other manufactures do allow this. If anyone has any suggestions they would be appreciated. Dell TS ignored my suggestion, instead asking if I had the cable of the device connected correctly and the on button switched on (there is no on button on it!).

My computer specs are:

Ryzen R10 5950x

RTX 3090

64gb RAM

AMD x570 motherboard

I bought this computer for a rather large amount of money for the purpose of VR and yet because of this issue I am unable to use my Reverb G2 headset. Actually not entirely true, I am able to use the headset connected to the top USB port (all others do not work) but after about 2 weeks it stops, coming up with the "requires a 3.0 superspeed port" message. This has happened on three Reverbs G2 now, thankfully I have been able to return all of them so far and get a replacement in the vain hope Dell will sort this issue out in time.

I believe the USB issues only crop up if you use pcie 4.0.

I have a RTX 2080 ti that's PCIe 3.0 and don't have any USB issues.

If you hade a graphics card like a RTX 3080 plugged into the first slot PCIe 4.0 you might experience USB issues with the AMD Ryzen.

Just one to make 1 correction on the chipset used for the motherboard.

The chipset is identical to the previous R10.

It's a B550A, not an X570.

It's on table 3 page 13 of the manual: R10 manual

I think it matters to some extend, because it's not a mainstream chipset.

It's an OEM only chipset and technically speaking is a B450 chipset that is rebranded as B550A.

Because of this it's harder to get support for it, unlike the X570 chipset.

It's further complicated by the fact that there are 2 "versions" of the R10, with a different motherboard but same chipset.

It all makes it hard to get support for it.

I should add that if you have an R10 with a Ryzen 5000 CPU, there's an updated bios that was made available just a few days ago. It might contain an updated AGESA version.

I cannot verify it because I have the "other" R10, but I can confirm the AGESA version is still 1.0.0.6 on the Ryzen 3000 version.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the motherboard and that the manual may be out of date or just wrong. I have a 0TYR0X which during an internet search comes up with an AMD x570. Not that it really matters for this discussion however, whichever it is it isn't functioning as it should be.

I downloaded the 2.1.3 (I think) bios update a couple of days ago,  sadly didn't fix the issue. In the update notes it mentioned something about RAM speed but nothing about usb connecticity issues so I wasn't holding on to much hope when I tested the headset in all my usb ports.

Latest from Dell tech support is they are trying to put the blame on the fact my computer has USB 3.2 and 3.1 and the device I am connecting is 3.0 and therefore incompatible.

Surely 3.2 and 3.1 are backwards compatible?

It feels like Dell is trying to do everything they can to avoid any responsibility and push the blame onto the makers of my device HP.

It actually has USB 3.1 GEN 2 at the back, and USB 3.1 GEN 1 on the front. You should use the front port for your device.

You can point them to this very good information page: USB 3.0 explained

From that page:

"USB 3.0 was released over ten years ago in 2008 and it was the third major revision to the USB standard. It was a big improvement from USB 2.0 which first arrived in 2000 with transfer speeds of only 480 Mbit/s. Since then, we’ve moved on from USB 3.0 which is now known as USB 3.1 Gen 1. Therefore, USB 3.0 is the same thing as USB 3.1 Gen 1."

PCI-E 4 and USB 4 make sharing the bus harder.

USB 3.1 Gen2 (10 Gbps) up to 12TB, VS Super-Speed USB 3.0 USB /3.1 Gen1.

USB3 is much faster with storage devices. UASP is the abbreviation of USB Attached SCSI Protocol and uses the standard SCSI command set. Compared with older USB mass storage bulk transfer USB 3.0 BOT. UASP has a 70% increase in read speed at peak performance and a 40% increase in write speed. Another benefit of UASP is that it reduces the processor overhead required by traditional USB BOT when transferring data.

So I think the "issues" with PCI-E 4.0 are bandwidth related.   USB 4 aka Thunderbolt 3 introduces more bandwidth issues being 40 Gbps)

USB4 is a USB system specified in the USB4 specification which was released in version 1.0 on 29 August 2019 by USB Implementer s Forum. In contrast to prior USB protocol standards, USB4 requires USB-C connectors, and for power delivery, and it requires support of USB PD and allows tunneling of Display Port and PCI Express.

Update from Dell support, according to them the Reverb g2 is not a compatible device, even though HP have confirmed to me that it should work on my computer. But the experts at Dell know better I guess....

I am actually shocked at Dell support. If they just put their hand up and said yes we are aware of the issue and are working towards a solution but it may be a couple of months then I could accept it. Instead they bury their head in the sand and blame anyone but themselves.

I wish so much I could post a review of this computer as I would tell any potential buyer how bad Dell are and hopefully put them off making the same mistake I did. Sadly my 2 week window or whatever it is has expired.  I will still push for a refund although not holding my breath.

I think they might be correct. The Reverb G2 requires a USB C port.

As per the manual for the R10 (if that is the machine you have), the USB C port does not support video/audio streaming power delivery. Maybe that is the issue, I do not know because I am not familiar with this device.

R10 Manual , page 10.

There is a power delivery USB port in the front, but you have to enable the power feature in the bios. It is disabled by default. Should be the third front USB port from the top.

this is a gemany r10 not sure if that makes a difference. The type c port is number 10 in the attached picture. Also the G2 comes with a type c to a adaptor.
