Area-51 ALX, Transplant/Transformation

Hello!

I am going to upgrade my Area 51 ALX computer. The components i am going to swap is cpu, mobo, gpu and probably modding my current psu(or buying a new one). i am gonna go a ryzen system.

My questions: Are there any specific things i should look for? I think about the motherboard if a "regular" motherboard(for example ASUS ROG Strix x570-F Gaming) can connect to the MIO board, or doesn't it matter since it is a usb 3 cable?.Or will i even be able to get everything to work with a regular motherboard?

My second question is about the PSU. Right now i need a 8 pin i think, to power the MIO board. I have seen some mods out there but i can't find a guide or if there are kits for this to buy, have anyone used or seen these kits/guides?

Thankz in advance!

A51 ALX: Alien Transplant

The ALX Files: Swap 51 R2 x99 Motherboard into R1

I left links in my reply to Alien Transplant (bottom page) for cooling, mthrbrd & PSU; the 'Asus Swap' post link has, what, 20+ mthrbrd swap pics? Aftermarket boards have been tried & working since 2011 / 2012 onwards, it's up to each individual owner to be able to have what it takes to get the old parts out, new parts in, & get it all going. For some it's easy, others difficult, depends on your skills & patience & diligence to do any reading/research etc

51 R1 doesn't have any USB3.0 support, you'd basically purchase a 3.5 or 5.25 drive bay device to have 3.0 for your flash drives etc

MIO board plugs into an open mthrbrd USB2.0 header (by USB cable USB_3 / MB_1); MIO needs 10pin power, see the last links in Transplant post

For stock PSU, 1200w, see J297R (good) & VHM5V (better)(also known as KGTGV)

Zhankz for Anzwer!

I saw your mio cables that you are selling on ebay, the problem is that i live in Sweden and it looks like you only ship within US:(.
I took out my current PSU in my aw area 51 alx and i can't decide what watt the stock psu is. Here is a picture:

If this is 1000watt then i guess i don't need to change PSU. But maybe i am just reading the text wrong.
Btw why is there only cables for 1000w and up? Isn't 1000w pretty much? Ofc some users use 1000w and up.

Yours is the G821T, 80Silver, 1100w

Your case harness should have x3 GPU cables (blue, yellow, black), this PSU was able to run x2 HD5970 (295 watts each)(card 1 gets blue, card 2 gets yellow, card 1/2 share the black 6pins)

"Btw why is there only cables for 1000w and up? Isn't 1000w pretty much? Ofc some users use 1000w and up" ... who's cables only 1000w & up?, me?

I've helped drop 850watts in, 850 is the lowest acceptable because your PSU needs plenty of ports to plug into, the MIO needs an open 6pin & 8pin port. Once it occupies an 8pin port, you have to consider your other hardware's 8pin needs

750w and under, the PSU tends to have too few ports. 1000w and up tends to have plenty. Typically you want your new PSU to have x8 8pin (x5 - x6 6pin) so everything (including MIO) can run best

Aftermarket PSU should have enough 8pin ports to run the potential hardware:

  • x4 8pins to run dual GPUs (now or later)
  • x2 8pins in case new motherboard has dual 8pin CPU or 8pin/4pin CPU
  • x1 8pin for MIO

PSU that comes with just x6 8pin ports (650w, 750w, some 850w, some 1000w/1200w), a compromise may exist (not enough to GPU, or can't power dual mthrbrd CPU headers), choices get limited. 1000w & up, you're buying it for the fuller front panel ports, I hope that makes sense

Zhankz.

So what do you think? Should i upgrade my PSU aswell?

I would like to do dual gpus in the future (2 x rtx 2080) but do i really need 1000w+ for that? I mean i have used some PSU calculators to see what PSU i need but they show 750-900 watt.(now thinking that i can keep the psu that i have right now) But it has too few pins for dual gpu.

Ok i think i need to upgrade my psu but If i would get a new PSU.
The problem still exists, that i can't get those mio-board cables since they are only sold within US(atleast those i have witnessed). Unless mr Cass-Ole can ship to Sweden.

I sent you a private message, didnt u get the notification when u logged in? Check your inbox?

My 1st A51 (below) came with G821T 1100w + dual HD5970 (295w each); three vid-cables; 2080s would wire up & connect the same, example:

  • top card yellow, bottom card blu, top & bottom share black 6pins

Area_51d

If the type of 2080 used needs dual-8pins, then ok, maybe try a 6pin-to-8pin adaptor on the shared-black cables --> if PSU shuts off under load (not enough power) then yes get an aftermarket PSU or try the stock 1200w VHM5V as mentioned (those have x4 vid-cables = x4 8pins + x4 6pins)

Whether to spend on an aftermarket PSU, remove old & install new is up to the owner & their budget

As for 'how many watts to buy', to me, translates more into 'how many front panel connectors can I get away with, now & later?'. Smaller watt PSUs tend to have few ports, higher watts have more ports, on average. We're not out for watts, per se, but a good power ports count
