That sounds like Legacy Alienware (pre-Dell involvement).
Maybe try over at Origin Forums.

That is a waste of time and money. Buy a new computer instead of changing the processor on an almost 10 yr old model. Processor upgrades are rarely worth the trouble and expense since there will not be much difference in performance and are almost impossible to find for old models.

I agree with @Mary G ... just keep what you have.
Like the Area51-R1 ... that MB with Intel-x58 Chipset is nice (if it still works 100%) however ... it is missing basic things like USB-3.0 and SATA-3/600. It's not even UEFI-based.

I'm pretty much done with AMD (so I don't keep-up with their models). The green team is treating me nice. I installed a Nvidia GTX-1070 my old Aurora-R1 a while back:

If you haven't already ...
Best upgrade for these older machines is a bootable SSD (for all Windows and Apps).

As for the free upgrade (after all this time) ... maybe try an "In-place upgrade" and then Activate it. After that, you should be able to do whatever, including a clean install.

1. The OEM memory it came with or crucial.com
2. I think too fast. Maybe it will down-clock itself properly?
3. Mine has (the original) 6 x 2gb 1333Mhz DIMMs (12gb in 2 banks of tri-channel). Still works perfectly.
As long as you have 12gb or more, I would not mess with it.

Windows-7 64bit
http://downloads.dell.com/published/pages/alienware-aurora.html
Windows-10 64bit
Everything comes with Windows-10 and Windows-Update.
Only other thing you need is Alienware Command Center v2.8.11.0
