Aurora R11, RTX 3080 capacitor concerns, #2 thread

Hi everyone,

I received my Alienware Aurora R11 with the RTX 3080.

After 30 minutes of gaming, my screen starts flickering and after 10s my screen is black and I have no choice to turn it off and back on. I have done all the updates: windows update, Alienware update and MS store.

I tried to restore it as new and same problem. I noticed that if I let my computer rest for 30 minutes it would work again for around 30 minutes of gaming and then same problem... I would guess my GPU has a high temperature problem but when I was monitoring with MSI Afterburner, it was around 65 degrees C.

I tried to replace the GPU with a GTX 1080 and everything works fine. I called the customer service and it seems that my GPU is not working properly... They are sending me a new one.

Anyone has experienced the same issue?

Before the 30 minutes I was able to run a benchmark and my previous PC got a better score

My brothers R10 3080 just died as well. Dell remotely took over his comp and ran some tests and it was bad. They sent a repair tech with a new 3080 and now its working flawless. His card worked from the start then started crashing every 6 hours, then 3, then maybe last 5 minutes.

Though the repair guy had to reschedule 3 times it is a step in the right direction at least.

I have not had an issues like that and i have logged a bunch of hours since receiving mine.

I had one crash, but i think that was a bad overclock on my part.

Liquid cooling for my R11 and regular for my previous one.

I received my Aurora R11 with 3080 three days ago and only started playing on it on Wednesday. Got a crash that same day after a 3 hour session, identic to the issue reported by other 3080 owners, screen starts flickering, then black screen.

Today it got worse, I started some benchmark at stock speed just to test it and got the same issue but more often. It actually got worse because after restarting the computer, the screen would remain black... Got the same issues on games too after just trying the benchmark, every time within 3 minutes.

Out of ideas, I contacted today the technical support. Went through a lot of tests unrelated just for the sake of verifying and got the crash during their stress testing tool for GPU, while the person wasn't watching the screen though... Was asked to provide some crash logs, so started the same apps and sent those logs.

Then got another person and started the same kind of tests, this time though the agent was watching the screen when the crash happened during the stress testing session.

So now I have to wait for them to check out the logs and get back to me. Thinking about doing a fresh windows install, though I highly doubt this is the issue. I'm a bit disappointed because it took a good 3 hours of my day trying to fix this on the phone with them. If I had bought the product somewhere else I would have ask for a replacement, but it seems the process here is going to be painful until they confirm, that it is actually the card that is causing the issue. If you type black screen screen 3080, you'll find lots of info about it, and some potential solution as undervolting it (which does not seem to work either for me).

So yeah I'm wondering if anyone has had similar issues, and what was the process like for them?

I sent it back because they can't fix it and the new GPU is not available and they don't know when they would get them...

Ok so you sent the whole PC back then? I'm going to wait until 15th January 2021 because that's the latest I can do. But of course if they can't offer a replacement for the GPU, then I'll send back the PC.

In the meantime, I'll try later tonight to set power management to  maximum performance when I play to see if that works though I have little hope. I even tried to undervolt the card since I read many people had the same issues but it did not fix my problem in this instance.

They want to check the crash logs, but it is 100% sure, it's the card because after the card crashes (black screen with computer still running), if I restart the computer, the screen remains black because the capacitors of the card have not emptied... I suppose technical support will want to reinstall windows, though that is for sure a waste of time.

Anyway I'll do some test later on with power management.

Yes I sent everything back and I asked to someone to build my next computer. I had the exact same problem as you and I tried to switch the GPU with a GTX1080 and everything worked as it should... I also trired to put the 3080 from the R11 to an other computer and it did not work at all... I don't know why! The customer service is not really great, they can't really do anything about it...

I swapped the 3080 in my previous computer, and it's now crashing. I removed Nvdia drivers with DDU and reinstalled them before making some tests.
As soon as I start a stress test in Kombustor it crashes. I had to install the 970 in the Aurora for the time being, which does not crash when I do the same stress test in Kombustor.

I'll call tomorrow to get a solution.

Also I was really disappointed with the benchmarks, it was not really amazing... To be honest I'm happy to send it back and now I have built my own rig with Ryzen 7 5800x and RTX 3090... This is a real beast for the same price

Good for you, that's a beast ! I'm actually considering this now, but not sure where to find those parts.

Benchmark were actually pretty good on my side, or at least that's what I think.

Since I've been replying to this thread I was contacted by numerous different agents from Dell, who asked me if I was using the computer in a "normal usage". I thought by normal he meant not overclocked, but actually no, he meant for Word/Excel, Notepad...

YES I did buy a gaming computer with a 3080 to hone my mad skillz in Excel

Can you try this Benchmark : https://benchmark.unigine.com/superposition

And give your score.

I wish I could but it crashes instantly, so no I can't

I'm using my old 970, you won't be impressed

My R11 with the 3080 arrived Monday and worked for three days before the crashes (black screen, computer still running) began happening.  Tech support had me disable overclocking in the BIOS, but it still crashed during their video hardware (stress) test.  They offered to send me a replacement computer, but I declined and this is going back for a refund.  After 20 years and 9 top of the line gaming computers from Dell they have lost a customer.

Same exact issue. RTX 3080. Tons of video drops, back screen, system does not come back and has to be power cycled to bring it back.  I can go a day or two at times without an issue but then it starts up again. I have had the system for just over a week now, the problems started 4 days after I go the system.

Right now, I am considering returning it.

I have asked for a replacement of the card but they have no idea when they'll have some in stock, gave me 28th Dec. as expected deadline but I doubt it will happen. On 1st January 2021 if I don't have a replacement for the card, I will ask for a refund.

Even if I get the card, I may have to ask for a refund, because the replacement card might just do the same. Even though the 3080 issue is an Nvidia design problem, Dell should be thoroughly testing the PCs they ship which carry those cards or simply not sell them at all.
