Aurora R12, performance and temp concern

I just  got my new R12 for two weeks, 11700kf +3080rtx , 16gb dule channel, 1TB nevm

Surprisingly,  while playing Godfall in 2k ultra setting, it sometimes has big framerate drop, especially when one or two mobs casting AOE magic

I feel like i was playing games in my old 760 GPU before my upgrade.

I thought it should be able to play most 3A game smoothly with the newest i7 cpu and 3080 gpu

really disappointed

Already have other problems like: two USB 3.1 port "flicking and disconnecting" ,

And my monitor (new AW2721D in DP) would not have a signal until getting to windows, so i could not get to see BIOS

I also used HW to check the temp, but i have no idea what temp is good or bad.

can anyone help to see how good is the data of the screenshot?

As a new R10 buyer myself (ETA tomorrow), I would say this chassis is the worst design among all other competitors, for thermal management.

I noticed some of the Dell deals on Aurora R10/R12 this week, which are not using liquid cooling (which is already on the weaker side of the spectrum for cooling compared to others) at all.

Your screenshot simply tells how badly it handles the heat. The easiest way could be to return it (since you have some other issues too), but if you are not wiling to give up, you may add a new front fan on the 3.5" bay, swap the AIO unit for something better, which may slightly improve your experience by a limited margin after $100+ spent.

In my personal opinion, the following temperatures are to high and measures should be taken to lower them.

Do keep in mind this is my personal opinion and the respective hardware manufacturer(s) might list and consider these temperatures as acceptable.

I mention all temperatures in degrees Celsius.

Too high:

- GPU memory at 102 degrees.

- CPU Cores: Anything above 90 degrees.

You also ran into the temperature limit for the video card (in fact you hit all limits) and that will cause the card to clock down at various times, lowering performance.

What to aim for:

- GPU memory 90 degrees maximum

- CPU core 80 degrees maximum

How to achieve this:

- Adjust case fans to run at higher speeds, increasing air flow, using custom fan curves.

- Adjust GPU fan curves to increase cooling capabilities.

- Lower video card power limit to 90% to lower TDP of the video card.

- Make sure the PC is sitting in a cool spot with nothing close to it that could obstruct air flow.

- I am assuming you are already using liquid cooling for the CPU.

Did you get the watercooling option? If not you're going to want to get that AIO. It's that Dell even offers 11th gen Intel chips without watercooling standard. These 14nm chips get HOT and you need either really good airflow and/or watercooling to get even stock performance in many situations. And we all know the Aurora case's airflow is atrocious.

If you have watercooling then change your fan curves to be more aggressive. Dell used cheap and loud fans, so by default they keep them kind of low so that the loudness isn't as apparent.

@Meister Bing

so that temp is really bad?

that data is for few hours of gameplay

whats a good temp for a new high end pc?

Those VRAM temps are very high and you should be concerned about that. I have an R10 and the GPU temps on my RTX 2070 Super can get out of hand pretty quick especially if i'm playing a game like Dying Light in 1080p ultra mode. I have lowered the temps by running MSI Afterburner in the background and turning up the fans between 75-80%. The single GPU fan gets loud but my temps are lowered and they peak around 71c on the VRAM and 60-61c on the GPU.

Yeah the design as you pointed out is really part of the problem. Even though the Aurora looks like a mid tower PC, it's using a nano-chassis. And that nano-chassis has little room to breathe which causes temp spikes. You can also try removing the side cover so as to pull in cooler ambient air or you can put a portable fan blowing towards the card to see if that helps.

I have an HP Omen 30L with a 10850K liquid cooled and an RTX 3080 and the temps are much much lower (GPU 45c avg, VRAM 58c avg) with no additional help such as removing a side cover or using MSI Afterburner. But it has a ton of room inside.

your junction temp is the far right temperature. Which the CPU can go up to 104+ on the junction just fine but it's not ideal. Your idle temps of 50c+ though is high, my r12 idles At 33c. Try a voltage offset/undervolt

@newrequiem If it is a gaming laptop, CPU/GPU at low 90C is justfiable for super heavy games. But for desktop, depending on various setup and thermal solutions, I would say most ppl would settle with mid 70C or lower

I purchased it directly from Amazon (US) when they were stocking them. I paid $1999.99 $USD. The specs are Intel i9-10850K liquid cooled AIO, 750W Corsair Gold PSU, 32GB HyperX Fury @ 3200Mhz, 1TB Western Digital NVME, 2TB 7200rpm HDD, RTX 3080, Wifi-6. The worse part is that same system I could have purchased for $1691 but the resellers on Amazon beat me to it when I had put it in my cart.

It's a really nice rig even at $1999. It has a quality look and feel with an all aluminum mid tower case and a glass side panel that shows off HP's RGB lighting.

I took another look at your screenshot tonight and realized one thing: a gaming running at 2k shouldn’t stress out both CPU/GPU at the same time, unless you are squeezing out way more than 120fps?

Set a FPS limit on your game should get rid of the overheating problem, if you have not yet returned your R12

Hey man.

Recent R12 buyer here too.

Though my numbers are not ideal... They're slightly better than yours. I've done this at the expense of sounds. It's noisy, however not yet 'loud'.

afatpigeon_0-1629488034890.png

Note: This is while playing Cyberpunk 2077 in 4k. I opened the app while playing, hence high min temps.

What I did:

afatpigeon_1-1629488114004.png

Used the custom 'smooth line' fan speed. The 'Performance' was making my GPU exceed 80. So I made the graph significantly steeper toward the latter. However, the sound is pretty noisy (using stock fans - I know I should change them).

afatpigeon_3-1629488328402.png

I also set the GPU fan speed to 90%. The stock fans are noisy anyway so I thought I may as well.

(alt+z > performance > fan speed target > manual > 90)

And that at the expense of noisy keeps your temps 'okay'. Not amazing. But I can't justify paying 4000 on a PC and changing the fans in after less than a month... yet.

Try using the Thermal Offset manually not the smooth curve. To much throttling IMO .
Top Fan 48%
Front fan 46% then save that to your game profile.

MSI afterburner - use their Custom Fan curve.

I'm no expert either but Im going on 2 years with an Alienware Gaming machine and I have tried many combination with AWCC setting for temps while playing my DCS game. What I meant by throttling is that by setting your case fans, Top and Front fans at one speed while playing a game/games is that the fans rpms don't go up and down with the changes of the temperatures and it helps keep a steady  CPU Frequency and also inside the case Temps, Ram M.2 Drive and also feed constant air flow for the gpu to help the cooling. Again I'm not all that good at this but thats what works for me and the game I play. My temps are mostly uder 72c and my 3090 is usually around 68c. I play in VR mostly so I don't really hear the fans and when I play in 2D/monitor I play with headphones "AW510H".

To me it's like turning on the ceiling fan when gaming. 1 good speed. You just have to find whats best for you and yours. Also keeping these Aurora's cpu @ 4.9 GHz is perfect , 5.0 GHz and above the fans/machine goes crazy loud ! and will definitely warm the room up.

Just my .02 cent
