Aurora R13, CPU throttling, power limit exceeding

Running Cinebench R23 there's a few issues I'm having.

Multi-Core

  1. It never goes beyond 4.8GHz
  2. All cores reach Core Power Limit Exceeded limits and is power limit throttled down to 4.4GHz.
  3. Computer constantly lowers power delivery from 232w down to 170w throughout the 10 min Cinebench R23 multi-core test.
  4. This happens with OC disabled in BIOS and enabled testing CL1 and CL2.

Single-Core

Didn't have any problems with single core.

@DELL-Chris M are you able to share what the defined manufacturers parameters are for these 2 CPU's?

No. That data is not published internally or externally.

Every tech video I’ve seen about the 12900K and overclocking/testing their are using 360mm Rads Why did AW not think about this. It’s just terrible !

I went with this combo on my new custom build:

Processors : Intel Core i9-12900K 16-Cores 3.2GHz (5.2GHz TurboBoost)
Motherboard : MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI DDR5
Memory: 32GB CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR5 (2x16GB) DDR5 5200MHz
System Cooling : iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLIX Liquid CPU Cooler (360mm)
System Fans : CORSAIR SP120 Elite Performance iCUE RGB software controlled
(3+1+6=10 Fans @25db ea.)

Lots of decisions to be made on a custom-build. @Vanadiel helped and approved my final config. However, I don't remember the choice of using a 360mm radiator even coming-into question.

Yep yep.  If I had known what I know now about it, I wouldn't have bought it at all.  I'm inching closer to having a completely different system.  I'll be selling off the R13.  It won't have a CPU/ssd, but everything else will be there.  64GB DDR5 ram, RTX 3080, I'll probably just leave the Noctua fans in it and also send the stock fans.  I dunno.  We'll see when the time comes for someone that is interested.

Well, on 2007 XPS was the high end from Dell. Aluminum case, very strong case. Next one, XPS 730 (quadcore CPU )and 730X (first i7 cpu). They made a X Clear side panel . Very nice computer and then starting with the first Area 51 (huge) and Aurora, both of them with Aluminum case. For me that I have 45 years old that time was the cuspid. Like the cars, new model are small than previous model, but more expensive, but cheap materials.

Well, because with Aurora r13 cant upgrade to next CPU generation, maybe they need to remember that for all XPS700 and XPS 710 customers, Dell made a motherboard upgrade program on 2007, that was free for XPS 700 and 710 models and pay like $250 for XPS 720 upgrade kit. So, it would be nice if Dell make same program for Aurora R13 to get next CPU generation or, update the BIOS for unlocked.

XPS 700 owners to receive free nForce 680i motherboard upgrade

Dell this week began offering motherboard upgrades to owners of XPS 700 and 710 systems. XPS 700 and 710 owners that purchased their systems on or before June 30, 2007 qualify for the upgrade program.

The upgrade kit includes the motherboard from Dell’s latest XPS 720 system. Dell also includes the required front panel I/O assembly, cables, mechanical assemblies, resource CD, owner’s manual, XPS mouse pad and DTS audio upgrade in the kit.

The Dell XPS 720 motherboard features NVIDIA’s nForce 680i SLI MCP chipset. Dell supports NVIDIA SLI, MediaShield and Native Gigabit Ethernet technologies. The motherboard also supports NVIDIA’s Enhanced Performance Profiles, or EPP, memory specification. First Packet and DualNet technologies are not supported.

Dell XPS 700 owners qualify for a free-of-charge upgrade with optional free on-site installation service. XPS 700 owners also receive a discount on Intel’s Core 2 Extreme QX6700 processor from the Dell Electronics & Accessories store. The discount is good for 25% off the current pricing on the Dell Electronics & Accessories store. Dell currently sells the Core 2 Extreme QX6700 for $1,199 – twice as much as a similarly clocked Core 2 Quad Q6700.

Dell XPS 710 owners have the option to purchase the upgrade kit for $250 USD from Dell. On-site installation services are available for a fee, not to exceed $150 USD. XPS 710 owners do not qualify for the 25% Core 2 Extreme QX6700 discount.

I got my refund for my r13 out of the return window, only by causing a lot of hassle. So it's possible, so carry on anyone that is unhappy. Chris has threatened to block me twice off this forum for stating truths basically. Make of it as you will guys. I have built myself a much better pc, with less money. Do the same people.

Alienware R13 - $3664

Custom built with premium parts - $2550 (better temps, better performance, 5600MHz XMP vs 4400MHz no XMP)

Now just have to sell off my R13.

Yes, video cards are dropping steadily in price due to the crypto collapse. It will become much cheaper again to built your own, as long as the video card prices stay at proper levels.

I think OEM's are going to notice a drop in sales unless they adjust pricing.

@F34R selling it should be fairly easy, there are still many die hard fanbois out there.  I took the i9 12900KF out of my R13, and put a 2nd hand 12700KF in it.  Sold it for AUD$4100 on ebay AU last week.  I finished my SFF system last week with the following gear:

  1. Coolermaster NR200P Max case kit (with 280mm RAD + 850W Gold PSU) AUD$429
  2. i9 12900KF CPU (from R13) $0
  3. MSI Z690i Unify ITX mobo AUD$529
  4. 32Gb G.Skill 5600Mhz CL36 (running at 6000mhz OC XMP2) AUD$499
  5. MSI RTX 3090 Trio X 24G OC video AUD$1900
  6. 2 x WD SN850 1TB drives (taken from the R13) $0

AUD$3357 build all said and done (but $3757 if you include the $400 purchase of the 2nd hand i7 12700KF to sell the R13).   So even though I lost on the original purchase price of the R13, I was able to put $ back in my pocket after the sale of it to make up for it a little.

Finally.

I'll take (reasonably priced) video-cards over Crypto any day. RTX-2070 and RTX-3070 should have nice budget video cards by now (a few years later after their release).

And yeah, my investments are with normal money and conventional stocks.
