If there's only 1 RAM stick, you can get away with putting it into DIMM1 or DIMM2.
However, if there are multiple sticks, there has to be at least 1 stick in the DIMM1 slot or it might cause you issues. If the stick you bought is the same as the one you already had, meaning matched for memory, voltage, and speed, stick the old ram into DIMM1 and the new ram into DIMM3.
If the new stick isn't matched to the old one, put your old one in DIMM 1 and the new ram into DIMM2.
This is why the 4 DIMM slots are color matched. Matched sets should go in matched color slots for efficiency.
Could be because you have mismatched RAM, since you got them at different times they'd be considered mismatched even if they are otherwise identical.
Try disabling XMP (if enabled), clearing CMOS, and then putting one in a black tab and one in a white tab, and then running the F12 ePSA long RAM test for errors.
If you still get errors, try to see if the error is coming from just one stick/ Run the test with just one stick installed, and seeing if each stick passes the test individually. One of the sticks may be bad.
I'd start there, but not rule out other possibilities at this point.
They should be similar in terms of memory, speed etc (tried to make sure of that before buying). I've currently tried moving them from slot 2 / 4 to slot 1 / 3, and will run a RAM test to see if that works. Otherwise I'll try to do slot 1 / 2 to see if that works. Finally I'll test the individual sticks and see if there is a problem with one of them.
Will come back with an update depending on what I find.

If they're mismatched, or you suspect as much, I'd try this:
Biggest, fastest stick in Slot 1, run test by itself.
Replace with other stick in Slot 1, run test by itself.
Biggest, fastest stick in Slot 1, other stick in Slot 2, run test together.
