Aurora R7, PSU Upgrade?

Hello all, I browsed the forum to find an answer, but haven't seen anything on this specific subject, if there is one, please direct me to it, thanks!

Situation: I am trying to upgrade the power supply on my R7 from the stock 460W to the stock 850W. This is to allow me to parallel some GPUs in the system.

Problem: Dell sent me the 850W power supply, but not the cables. I cannot use the 460W cables because they are built in, not modular like the 850. I cannot find anything on Ebay or Amazon, it's all for the R5, R6, etc. Nothing seems available for the R7. Dell's tech support was less than helpful, and gave me an incomplete list of part numbers for the connectors I would need.

Question: Does anyone know where I can get the cables I need, or at least have a list of the part numbers? I'd appreciate any help/ advice at this point. Thank you!

Your in luck ... @speedstep just compiled a new page with everything in one place:

https://www.dell.com/community/Alienware-Desktops/alienware-aurora-r6-power-supply/m-p/6070833/thread-id/3317

Aurora R5-R6-R7 all use the same parts with regards to the Dell 850w modular Power-Supply and wiring harnesses. The DPN for the PS when it's ordered for a Aurora-R6 is: N1WJD .

The Dell-OEM (Delta-made) 850w modular Power-Supply is used in many different Alienwares (Aurora, Area-51) and Dells (Precision Workstations) . As with many other Dell parts ... the same exact part for a different machine can have a different DPN (Dell Part Number).

Not sure if Huntkey ever worked-out their flawed manufacturing process with the bad fans in their version of the Dell-OEM 850w PS. It seems (especially with Aurora's) you can get either unit pre-installed. If you have a choice, I would order the Delta-made unit:

And just a general FYI ... modular cables for modular Power Supplies are not interchangeable between makes/models (since there is no "standard"). You must buy the matching ones. One of the only exceptions is the Dell-OEM 850w Delta and Huntkey models ... since they were both designed to be functionally identical.

Thanks so much for the link! The problem I'm running into is I can't seem to search for these on their site, do I have to call them directly to order them?

Note that I added some info to above post.

Yes, you have to call Dell Parts on the phone.

Hey ScotchAndBagpipes,

Did you successfully upgrade your Alienware Aurora R7 PSU and graphics card? I, too, am looking to do this and have ZERO idea what to order, how to order, etc. Would love any feedback on what you did. I am in the exact same boat (have the standard R7 PSU that came with my computer but need to upgrade it so I can also upgrade my GTX 1080 to a RTX 2070).

Thanks!

I suggest you either learn-how to do-it-yourself ( DIY ), or just get a friend to help you.

Try not to break it or make it worse  :Surprise:

...  since that machine is valuable (but only if still working 100% properly).

Another user in the same boat here.

Just got my RTX 2080 Super today. Have had the new 850W N1WJD Power Supply in box waiting for today. I went to open the box, and low and behold, there were no cables included!

Soooo... now I'm trying to hunt down the cables.

There's a dude on YouTube has upgraded his R7 Power Supply using: EVGA Supernova G3 850w Power Supply. The only issue he had was closing the side panel while having a cable powering the 1Tb HDD towards the top. This could be a deal breaker for me.

The other unfortunate thing about the power N1WJD sent from Dell is that it has no instructions that I can find on what to hook everything up to. The dude on YouTube at least walks through every step of the way:

Nothing particularly special about the cables EXCEPT the special flat 6 pin mini sata power for the Optical Drive.

Most PSU's DO NOT HAVE that.  So you need to buy an adapter.

https://www.amazon.com/CRJ-15-Pin-Slimline-Sleeved-Adapter/dp/B07FK5G2TF/

EVGA 850BQ works with the above caveat.

Aurora R5 R6 share the AREA51-R2 power supply but get their own unique cable set   R5 R6 works with  Delta   850w
Since this is modular IT DOES NOT COME WITH CABLES.

You cant transfer cables from the 460w because they aren't removable.
