Aurora-R7, S2716DG, PSM issues
Hi, I have a Dell S2716DG with an R7 with a Nvidia 1080 graphics card. My power options are set to High Performance. I have the monitor set to turn off after 15 minutes and have the R7 sleep after 30 minutes. I’m running a very long process on the R7 that does not allow it to sleep after 30 minutes. But following the monitor setting, it goes into Power Saving mode. My problem is that the monitor won’t wake from power saving mode until I do something drastic like pull out its power cord. Then the monitor turns on as normal. Coming out of Power Saving mode when the R7 is sleeping wakes both the monitor and the R7. I’m sure I have something set wrong with the Power Options. Could someone help me please to get them straight? Thanks

I found this statement on Dell’s web site:
Dell 27 Gaming monitor S2716DG will not wake
In essence, many folks are having the exact same problem since 2015! Basically Dell admits there’s a flaw with this monitor (and it’s gaming cousin) that many times prevents it from coming out of “deep sleep” mode when a mouse is moved or a key is pressed.
The workaround is to shut down the monitor and turn it back on again. But I can attest that this “fix” definitely does not work all the time for me. It’s a flaw in the monitor itself that evidently Dell can’t fix with drivers or chooses not to waste their time developing a fix. Either way, I spent over $600 USD on this monitor that is defective.
I’m calling customer service tomorrow to voice my extreme displeasure at the situation and try to get Dell to upgrade the monitor to a newer model that doesn’t have this problem.
Thanks to all, especially Tesla, who tried to imagine the problem and solutions. Unfortunately there are no permanent fixes.

I'm guessing you mean Aurora-R7?
You can try a different kind of port and cable, but better test is to move that monitor and cable to a different machine and test same way ... see where problem follows.

Hi Tesla
Yes, it’s an Aurora R7. Sorry for being so terse with the information
i went into Device Manager and it showed that the monitor was Set to Generic PnP monitor. I updated the driver (I don’t know why Windows 10 wouldn’t do this automatically, maybe because I’m using the display port?)
Would these combinations of settings cause the monitor to show these symptoms?
thanks again.

Nice find.
So, does disabling "Deep Sleep" on the monitor help?

It seemed to for the past 12 hours.
Unfortunately Dell sells only 2 monitors that support G-Sync (mine and an Alienware curved widescreen that won’t fit into my small computer space). So I’m hoping that disabling Deep Sleep alleviates the problem for a year or so until new monitors are released by Dell.
Due to financial reasons I have to use my Dell Preferred Account to finance a new monitor. So I’m stuck with Dell for now.
At least disabling Deep Sleep decreases my boot time. I can come out of sleep raring to go in 0.5 seconds ;)

The S2716DG is not flawed. It is working as designed. As explained in that article,
"In order to meet the sleep mode power consumption of 0.5W, the Nvidia G-sync module within the S2716DG will be turned off after the monitor enters sleep mode. This state will ignore mouse movement."
As shown in that article, you have three options;
Deep Sleep Mode enabled =
* Press any of the monitor front panel buttons once and the monitor will recover from sleep
* Power cycling the monitor will also allow the monitor to wake from sleep
Deep Sleep Mode disabled =
* Press Button 3 to enter the On-Screen Display (OSD) Menu
* Use Button 1 or Button 2 and highlight Others. Press Button 3 to select the option
* Select Monitor Deep Sleep option and Press Button 3 to Disable
* Exit the Menu
and try to get Dell to upgrade the monitor to a newer model that doesn’t have this problem.
This request would be denied. Per the purchased warranty, if the S2716DG is found to be faulty through Technical Support troubleshooting, you are only eligible for a like for like model exchange.

1. Good. That appears to be the "fix" (not that anything was actually broken). Good work. :Yes:
2. I see no reason to replace the monitor.
Actually, I'm impressed that Dell was able to find a way to "stay in compliance" while also providing a way for the G-Sync monitors to work in a more "normal" Sleep-Mode.
