Make sure you do it under warranty because if you need a BIOS upgrade and you bricked the system, you want to be covered.
I believe the first R8s already shipped with 9900K so you should be ok. However, 9900K has 2 steppings? P0 and R0? My MSI motherboard didn't recognize my boxed 9900K when I first plugged it in and I had to do a BIOS upgrade to get it to work.
