Aurora R8, M.2 and U.2

just bought an R8 in sale to replace old pc. It is coming with M.2 1TB drive installed. My old pc has a U.2 2TB drive that I would like to install on the R8. Config specs does not show M & U configuration (not surprising). Has any one tried to add a U.2 drive via PCI x4 adaptor card or will the BIOS clash when choosing drive to boot from?

The R8 is very poor for heat management. My RTX already blows relatively hot when I run a game on a high setting. By adding the PCI slot with the M2 SSD, it blocks the air flow and will also be a natural heat attractor. If you would like that additional SSD, it might be better to actually have an M2 SSD enclosure and set it on the side. You should already have the 3 other slots for hard drives, so adding a 4th one is a bit overkill. I would swap one of the hard drives out for much larger storage. l

The other advice I have, would be to install MSI Afterburner. This will allow you to build your own fan curve. The software on Dell is also poor for keeping it naturally cooler, versus a fan explosion every few seconds.

"by adding the PCI slot with the M2 SSD, it blocks the air flow"

There's actually different types of GPUs. There's blower style cards that blow air out the back of the case, and then there's the open air style double or triple fan models that take air from below the GPU and send it out sideways.  The RTX Ampere lineup also introduced a hybrid model.  The OEM GPUs and the titan Xp in my PC are blower style GPUs so having the PCIe add in card for the M2 makes negligible difference in terms of airflow or temps.  The location of the add in card has no real impact on the GPU temps or case temps, because the airflow on the GPU is front to back.  It also has negligible impact on the case airflow, because the airflow from the fan directed there is also front to back, and the card is only a few millimeters thick.  If there were an open air GPU then it would make a serious impact on temps.

As an aside, I removed the 3.5" spinner HDD in the photo to a different PC, and now use my NAS server as a central backup file storage location so I just have NVME m2 drives in the PC now.

Hello, I have an R8, but I can't find where the M.2 slot is on the Motherboard...Any help would be appreciated if you were able to locate.

Good to see you my friend!

I will not be here much longer if they cannot get the platform functioning properly.

I hope all is well with you and your family!

And look who's back? I've been staying away from here until I saw your name pop up in the email.
