AW2721D, black screen, image lost while using it
Hello,
I bought the AW2721D 2 weeks ago.
I noticed that the screen randomly looses the image, suddenly the screen goes black (but the screen power is ON). The backlight of the screen stays on. The complete sequence is
Image OK with backlight ON -> No image with backlight ON (you can see it because of IPS glow), and the OSD is not appearing using buttons on the monitor;
When it's happening, the screen does not respond, it's impossible to use the buttons on the monitor to display the OSD to change input or display informations for example.
The only way to get the image back is to turn off the screen, and turn it on again.
I've been experiencing this on:
- Windows 10 1440p (240hz) using a DisplayPort cable while gaming
- MacOS BigSur 1440p (144hz) using HDMI cable while working
The firmware on my screen says it's M0B101.
Do I have a defective unit ? My friend who bought the same screen at the same time on the same reseller (amazon.fr) does not have this issue.
I doubt that the power cord is the reason this is happening because the backlight stays on. Any loss of power would translate in no power at all (no backlight) for a short amount of time. This is not the case for me.

Add me to the list.
So I have two of these monitors - just received them 4 days ago.
--Monitor #1 - uses Display port with G-Sync on
--Monitor #2 - uses HDMI - G-Sync off.
My GPU (MSI GTX980Ti) has only 1 DP so must use HDMI on one monitor. GTX980Ti does not support G-Sync over HDMI (of course I'll be upgrading!). Latest display drivers installed (461.40) and Dell monitor .inf files installed.
I've experienced 2 black screens events as follows:
#1 - Left the PC on but left the room for about 30 mins. Came back to both screens black - nothing would bring them back on except a reboot. The PC seemed to be in a hibernate mode due to a change in the Power settings (which I did not change but there was a huge Windows update? ). It was strange. I changed the power setting back to never hibernate. Although this doesn't make sense it might be a direct result of the hibernate mode.
#2 - Monitor #2 just randomly went black while browsing. No rhyme nor reason for this. It turned black, then came back on after a slight delay. Happened about an hour ago so I googled it and found this thread.
And here I am hoping that I haven't bought 2 duds.

I was experiencing this with the latest Nvidia GPU drivers. For me, it wasn't a monitor issue. More details here:

Had this happen while having the HDMI cable connected to my PS4 Pro and playing a game.
I forget, but does this monitor come with an HDMI cable? If it doesn't then I'm using my own cable and probably not a cable issue if everyone else is having the same issues.

It's not cable related, I've been experiencing this issue with official cables, or premium display port / hdmi cables.
It's not related to nvidia drivers either, because it's happening using a MacBookPro with an AMD card inside too.
For information, this issue is still happening, happened to me last week again.....

I'd edit my previous post but here's a video of the monitor blacking out repeatedly.

Anyone else have it happen this often?

Yeah support reached out to me regarding this case. Told me to run through typical gamut of troubleshooting things with the last two things being, install the latest drivers (which only affects a desktop and not a ps4) and do a factory reset.
Then today, I recorded a video of it spazzing out turn off and on like 20 times in 3 minutes. I think I want a full refund....

Did you ever get an update regarding this issue? I received my brand new AW2721D the day before yesterday and I experienced this issue for the first time today. This monitor is fantastic, but if there isn't a fix for this problem I'm going to have to return it...

I've uploaded a video of my monitor showing the problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iI-ci4dElTo
I've also posted in this reddit thread which discusses the issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/kx4m2l/alienware_aw2721d_black_screen_happening_randomly/
For everyone else experiencing this issue, please take a video of it and post it here. This is clearly widespread, and if enough people report the issue Dell may be quicker to release a fix. I'm hoping that it can be resolved with a firmware update.

I have the same screen since December. With the first one I never experienced this issue, but I only connect with my PC with the displayport cable provided with AW2721D. The replacement I received after about a month never had this issue at least until now. Is this happening only to users having two input cables connected? When this happens are both inputs active? I mean you have both machines powered on and sending signals from both input cables? HDMI & Displayport?

That's pretty interesting, as a matter of fact I do have both an HDMI connected device (work laptop) and a Displayport device (gaming PC) connected. However, I've seen the issue when the HDMI device was powered off and not sending a signal, but the Displayport device was on and sending a signal.
Are you saying that you never saw this this issue until you connected a second device to your AW2721D?

I've notice another issue on my unit - the downlight seems to be really flaky. When I installed the monitor it didn't turn on at all, and I chalked it up to a bad LED or something, and decided to live with it since I don't care about RGB very much. However, when I bumped the monitor bezel with my finger, the light suddenly came on! Here's a video: https://youtu.be/LIUmJSzHP94
If you watch the video posted by Franknozly a few days ago, you can see that his downlight is also flipping on and off, seemingly at random, independent of the black / blank screen issue: https://youtu.be/10j4dmz5Gpg
Has anyone else noticed problems with their downlight?

An incident has been created and I'm awaiting for some kind of RMA shipping label to be created or something but basically I haven't heard anything back since 3/16.
I do have hdmi and dp both connected but only hdmi has an active connection. The desktop is powered off.
I also happen to have a backlight bleed issue on the bottom left corner.
