AW3423DW, packaging causing permanent damage to screen

My AW3423DW was packaged in a way that leaves permanent on the screens coating. Mine was shipped without a protective peel off film on the screen. Instead, bubble wrap is taped to the screen. During transit, the direct contact with the screen leave scuffs and smudges on the screen.

A quick search for AW3423DW screen marks will lead you to several examples of this. A small number of customers appear to have been shipped replacements and many of those also have marks, due to the packaging still lacking a protective film.

There also seems to be no practical way to review my product and try to make more would be consumers aware of this issue. A review cannot be left from the website user portal from the "my products" lift and the Dell "Alienware connect" app in the Microsoft store cannot be downloaded.

My AW3423DW pictures

Re: You’ve received a private message from Dell Community Forum
I am so sorry the screen looks normal in the images.  Could you wipe the screen with a clean cloth and run a self test on the monitor and check if there are any issues with the display?

If you have recently purchased a aw3423dw, ensure you check for these marks immediately. Currently Dell does not consider this a "known issue" and does not cover it under warranty. Your only opportunity for an exchange will be during the initial 30 day return window. These marks may go unnoticed initially and may not be immediately obvious without direct lighting. I'd recommend using a flashlight and scanning over the screen to see if the marks are visible. I'd also be curious to hear if the cause of this issue ever gets rectified and a protective film is placed on the screen prior to boxing.

Apparently the AW3423DWF has the same issue.

My DWF should be delivered soon. I will let you know how the packaging is.

No packaging issues with my DWF. Monitor is amazing, beats my LG OLED TV.

I'm curious. Is your AW3423DWF free of marks because the packaging is now up to standards for what you'd expect when purchasing what is priced as a high end monitor? Or did you just win the lottery? Was there a protective peel off film on the screen or was it still bubble wrapped just tapped to the screen?

I checked with a flashlight and under various angles. There's not a mark on the glass anywhere.

There was no protective film, but they did have 3 layers of protection for the monitor.

The bubble wrap is present, but the inside of it has a smooth protective layer attached to it and is smooth and soft. It was also taped very well in place.

I am thinking the marks could come from Samsung, who manufactures the panels. Maybe their shipping has caused it. Could also be the packaging, and maybe they improved upon it.

Whatever the cause, mine is not affected by it. And I checked it very thoroughly after seeing those pictures.

Thanks for sharing, I'm glad your doesn't have these blemishes. Your packaging does sound like it is slightly different.  Hopefully that helps, shouldn't be playing a lottery when purchasing a monitor like this. I think we would need to see a production video, like the "How it's made" show to know exactly how these marks are formed. However they have the exact same pattern as the bubble wrap. So I believe Dell is applying a "anti-glare" coating to the screen and then the monitor is packaged before the coating has fully cured. That'd be my best guess.

I was looking very closely at the glass, and to me it seems to be identical to the glass used on my LG OLED TV. That includes the black border of the screen itself.

The other thing I noticed is that it has a very thin bezel, and the screen itself is slightly recessed in the frame. Maybe that small recession helps also?

Found this review left by Hiranya on the Dell website. They replaced his monitor but can't do anything for me?  Is this a staged review to make it seems like they are trying to address this issue?

Great monitor with few downsides.

Great monitor, only things that I miss are upgradable firmware and some newer features introduced with AW3423DWF. Games look amazing and the color fringing on text is imperceptible for me unless I look very closely. Dell support was amazing for getting my first unit replaced (it had unremovable marks from packaging on the screen), got the new one in 3 days and sent back the old one without any downtime for me.

I just received my Dell 27" G2722HS (G-Sync capable) Gaming Monitor (for $99 shipped via Black-Friday sale).

I was also surprised to see that the traditional Dell protective peel off film was missing. It wasn't wrapped in bubble wrap, just one of those thin LDPE thin foam like bags. Luckily, no scratches or scuff marks.

So much for the Dell cost cutting measures. You would think a $0.50 piece of plastic film would be a good investment for all parties involved (including Dell and buying customer). Hopefully, the Dell business UltraSharp monitors still get the plastic film covering.

It actually comes with a "special" cleaning rag. I always recommend regular lukewarm water with a very soft rag. Just make it moist a bit and it should clean very well.

Dry it off with a woolen based cloth and it should be spotless.

Good to hear yours faired-well during-shipping and you like it.

But yeah, I think glass (or what passes for glass now-days) is more durable than the plastic you might find on a TN or IPS flat-panel.

A tip for everyone reading... I've found it's best to only clean your monitor's flat-panel screen with a little distilled water sprinkled on a VERY soft rag. Something like a clean, soft-weave 100% cotton rag (ie, tee-shirt), or maybe a high-quality micro-fiber rag (that isn't just nylon/polyester). Those rags that come with expensive eye-glasses are good.

Anyway, never use paper towels or rags made of paper/wood by-products.

Finally, don't assume the plastics and glass used in your computers, monitors and portable devices are as durable as the ones used in your car. There are many different types of plastics and glass.

another review mentioning the marks.  However it's unfortunate this perspective is probably how many consumers reacted to seeing the marks and just accepted them, but a monitor with this price tag should not suffer permanent defects out of the box.  The marks may be hard to initially spot if not looking, but they cannot be unseen.  I see them all the time now that I know.  Especially during black load screens.......just long enough to get a little depressed.

Best looking monitor I've seen, yet!

This thing is gorgeous, and worth the cost.

The only reason for a missing star was due to the first monitor having issues with the displayport making the screen go black for a few seconds several times per hour, as if it were changing inputs. I worked with support, and within a few days they shipped a replacement (2-day with return label). New monitor does not have the issue.

Another very minor note, as you can't tell when using it--the monitor is placed directly against bubble wrap, and both monitors had friction marks from the bubble wrap. I've used electronic wipes to try and remove them, but they appear to be permanent. You can't notice them unless you're looking at just the right angle with the monitor off, but otherwise the only issue is knowing that they exist. No performance hit, though.

I know everybody keeps talking about the bubble wrap, but has anybody considered the possibility this is a Samsung issue, who makes the panel?

Since there's no protective film, Samsung ships the actual panel without that because otherwise there would be a protective film.

My 65 inch LG OLED had no protective film, cost 3 times more, and has no marks on the glass...
