Replace Ryzen 5800X with 5950X - Supported?

Hi all,

I am planning to purchase a new desktop and still undecided between the new Intel 11 and the AMD.

Question on the Ryzen if I purchased an Aurora Ryzen 10  with the 5800X and later want to replace the 5800X with the 5950X,  Does the current motherboard/BIOS support the 5950X? From what I read the current motherboard is the B550a (B450). I downloaded the PDF file with the specs of the aurora and shows that motherboard is indeed a B550a but the in the supported CPU the 5950X is not listed. I saw the 5900X, 5950 but nothing that says the 5950X is supported.

Any experience with the swap of the 5800X with a 5950X.

Any input would be really appreciated.

Why not buy one with a 5950X in it from the factory? They do have that configuration available to order for the R10.

I wished it was available. I looked for it and it is not available.

I also thought they sold it with the 5950X for a brief period of time.

Anyway, aside from the obvious thermal limitations with this SFF case and AIO, I can't see a reason why you wouldn't be able to pass POST with a 5950X if you otherwise have Ryzen 5000 series support.

They used to have the 5950x as an option, I think the only reason you can't get it current is inventory. Since it was a factory option you should have no problem with the upgrade. I plan to do the same thing.

I would check the performance specs and see if it's worth getting the 5800x over the 5800 since you plan to upgrade later.

Why not go with the 5800X? Less cores & less heat = better for gaming...

Unless you want to make videos & do other things while gaming and then the 5950x would be ideal in that case.

That's what I am thinking - To go with the 5800X and the 6800XT  but I would like to have the option to swap CPU with a 5950X at a later time.  I would love the 3090 but expensive for what I can get.

Flight Simulator 2020 and some video editing is my focus that's why the 5950X.

It seems the probability that I would be able to swap it is high. I may pull the trigger this week.

I completely understand, I wanted the 5950x and 3090 but they didn't have either when I ordered. I was able to get the 3080, 5800x, 64gb of 3400mhz ram, 1tb nvme, and killer wifi.

There's a thread on here were people are reporting issues with their R10 5950X.

You might want to read that thread and check with Dell on the status of the reported issues, before pulling the trigger on that upgrade in the future.

Thanks for the warning, I had seen that and my upgrade is way down the line towards the end of warranty if it happens at all, before then I will have transferred most everything on to a new motherboard in a different case.

I got my system with the 5800x yesterday. I haven't gotten it out of box yet but I would recommend the fan upgrade because of how hot the cpu runs plus extra cooling is always good. Only part I'm not sure about is a fourth fan in the 3.5" slot.

I placed the order today.  It will be a long wait for this machine to show up.  I have no rush.  5/15 shipping date.  Maybe I get the B550 vs B550a ( I know ...keep dreaming)

It will give me time to see it makes sense to replace some of the fans and/or the liquid cooling with the Corsair.

Thank you everyone.

Please let us know what upgrade you do and what improvement you see.

Overall, I am debating between going with the Noctua Fans in push/pull for the liquid cooling radiator or get the H80i with one Noctua Fans. No sure which provides better cooling.

And yes, planning to replace the front fan with a Noctua Fan and add one more in the HD cage.
